One of our stops during our vacation on Lemnos island was a place called Ammothines - Sand dunes. This amazing place is a real desert formed by the wind! Speckles of sand from the nearby shoreline are deposited in this inner part of the island forming an out-of-this-world landscape that expands for about 7 hectares.
If the sound of the word 'desert' itself brings you images of vast fields of sand stretching as far as the eye can see, then the Sand dunes of Lemnos are not exactly your typical image of a desert. It's place to a variety of flora and fauna species.
Here you can see birds and rabbits, desert lilies, wild olive trees, oleander trees, wickers, wild pear trees and thyme bushes. The desert is protected under European Union regulations (92/43/ΕΟΚ).
The feeling walking across this place? Amazing!
We could not have visited on a better day, as it was cloudy and windy (but not too windy).
Reaching the end of the cliff you'd see a cloud of dust dancing on the brim and waves of sand moving as if you 're walking on a sea made of sand. I can't hide you the fact that as I was walking alone (since Trumpman stayed in the car to watch Little Man), I got a little creeped out by the eerie scenery around me. It felt like a ghost or monster would pop out of nowhere and take me away from my boys, never to see them again.
Was it worth the drive from Myrina, the capital of Lemnos, all the way there? Definitely!
Would I go there again! Of course and I would try to walk all the way down the cliff and explore the huge sand field below it!
