Silver 2000 Reis coin from Brazil/ Re-blog lottery for the chance to win 3 HSBI!

Today I thought I would bring out another coin I picked up on my trip through Brazil. This was quite some time ago, since I don't speak Portuguese I haven't ever spent too much time there. It's a very cool country to visit, but I understand security has becomes a much bigger issue since I was there last. So common sense should be used when visiting any place touristic in nature, and even more so elsewhere.

The history of the mint that produces the coins in Brazil is interesting. Apparently prior to Peter II, king of Portugal from 1683 until 1706, not much gold was found in Brazil. That changed with the discovery of gold in 1693 at Minas Gerais, a region of Brazil. The region also eventually started to produce diamonds as well, so a very big resource for the nation. It created an economic boom causing the king to establish a mint in the city of Rio in 1694. Once Portugal ceded independence to Brazil the Brazilian government took control of the mint and coinage.

This coin was produced in 1907, a nice silver coin even though it has seen some wear from people hands and pockets over the years!

This coin is bigger and heavier than the one I shared about a week ago. Produced with 90% silver it makes it great for collectors and stackers. It's always fun to just imagine where these older coins have been and the stories they could tell (if they could talk...) Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below and thanks for stopping by!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

THat is a huge bastard! Hefty as all hell. Imagine how much more sturdy pockets were made back in the day!

Many of the bigger coins didn't get circulated as much because people didn't like lugging them around. Which is great for collectors today!

Ah I forgot !DHEDGE

Thats a really nice coin first I seen it

Thanks! They have produced a lot of great coins over the years back when silver was cheap anyway...

That is a very interesting story about the coin. so nice that brazil already minting their own count at that early time already.

anyway, thank you very much for the prize I really appreciate it.
count me in into this round again.

Minted in 1907 this coin definitely has history!😀
Good to know that traveling in brazil, requires added levels of security!
Now days most countries require you to always be on guard!😀

Great history! Travelling anywhere anymore you have to be more careful, and it's sad. The world is a lot more dangerous now than it was even 30 years ago.

That is very sad……..😊
Well, the first things that my parents taught me when traveling as a teenager, was never put your wallet in your back pocket !
Sounds like it’s much more dangerous than that now !😮

You sure do have a great collection of these South American coins. You spend a lot of time there I guess? They do have some cool designs and I like the history you share behind them as well. You and me both are sentimental about the old coins man.

I love South American coins, I've spent most of the 90's in places they really only spoke Spanish. That's when I started collecting coins from the region. Us older guys appreciate the history and designs they used to use. Shame that the politicians don't want to bring them back...

I enjoy seeing the coins, that is for sure. Yeah, the older designs are much better, we agree on that.

Like most countries in the western hemispere, this Brazilian coin has a lovely version of Liberty, whereas Canada doesn't have an equivelent representation of Liberty. We're just sheep to be sheared.

It always surprised me that Canada never moved away from the monarchy on coinage. Tradition dies hard!
