When I was in my twenties and early thirties I traveled as much as I could afford, so I got to see a lot of the world. It was a lot of fun and I'm grateful that I made the time to do it. Today I have a kind of a cool coin that I picked up on a trip to Israel. I had always wanted to visit for all the historical sites, and I'm kind of an amateur wanna be archeologist after watching "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" one too many times. It's such a interesting place to visit and it's one location very worth the trip. I was even lucky enough to go inside the Dome of the Rock mosque which was awesome, but I understand now that non Muslims aren't allowed to enter. So I was very lucky in my timing!
This coin I picked up at a shop in Jerusalem mainly because of it's date of minting, being 1972. It just happened to be my year of birth as well. Let's skip the old man jokes... It's a cool looking coin, with lettering in Hebrew, Arabic, and some English. It was meant as a commemorative coin so it was never circulated but was already a little tarnished when I found it. It was the only one they had so I picked it up, a nice silver souvenir.
About the coin:
Country: Israel
Denomination: 5 Lirot
Year: 5733 (1972)
Mint: Jeruselem
Composition: Silver 75%
Weight: 20 grams
Diameter: 34 mm
Thickness: 3 mm
Edge: Reeded
Demonetized: Yes
Designer: Nathan Karp
Obverse: Hanukka Lamp from Russia supported by stylized lions
Reverse: Denomination with script in English, Hebrew, and Arabic which characters I can't seem to use here but here is the translation from Numista: 24 YEARS TO THE STATE OF ISRAEL. 1972. ISRAEL 5 LIROT ISRAEL
Sorry on the translation, I don't speak Hebrew or Arabic so I had to use the translation on Numista. This was my favorite coin I picked up on that trip. The one thing I got burned on though is it's 75% silver, the shop owner told me it was 90%. Oh well, when in a tourist trap never expect the truth... That's my quick Sunday post, feel free to leave any questions or comments below and thanks for stopping by!
