Wood-Based Batteries- A Renewable Energy Source

The world is seeking new battery technologies that are clean, green, come from renewable energy sources and that meet current needs. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used, but they require rare-earth metals and can be unreliable in certain environmental conditions. A breakthrough development in plant-based batteries has been made, and currently a partnership between Northvolt and Stora Enso is producing a lignin-battery.
Sodium-ion batteries, nuclear –diamond batteries and now carbon batteries sourced from wood are promising alternatives to current lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. Electric vehicles need a quality battery that performs better than currently utilized lithium-ion batteries
A new battery technology that cultivates carbon from wood is being developed by Northvolt. Northvolt was founded by former Tesla employees who have begun work on batteries from recycled materials including nickel and cobalt. The easier it is to source material used to make batteries, the more likely renewable batteries will be mass produced.
The most truly impressive battery technology Northvolt is working on is a carbon-battery created from wood products. Northvolt and Stora Enso are working on wood-batteries produced from local forests.
The wooden-batteries work with an anode formed from plant ligin. The batteries produced have a “Lignode” that is the inner anode technology that powers the battery. Lignin and the plants that supply it are renewable. Stora Enso owns some of the most trees in its portfolio, and has the ability to source and grow enough trees and plants to create this renewable battery. Large companies like Weyerhaeuser and Energizer can form partnerships to source wood materials and create the renewable lignin anode in a sustainable product.
Northvolt is working on amazing renewable and batteries made from recycled materials that will help further adoption of cleaner energy sources. I am a huge fan of sodium-ion and lignin batteries, and see them having a positive impact on the electric vehicle market. Litium-ion and lead-acid batteries pose a threat to the environment, and the universal and hazardous waste they produce can be reduced through the adoption of new renewable batteries. With so many electric vehicles and other products requiring electric power, we need renewable batteries like the lignin battery.
