July 5th, My Personal Independence Day

in #story2 years ago

Tomorrow will mark a solid six years of blogging on the blockchain. The world (and I) have changed so much in that relatively short span of time.

Without wasting too much time on the backstory, I had gotten pretty used to walking a tightrope. By 2016 I had been writing for over twenty years and working my cubicle job to pay the bills. My dream was always to travel the world but there was never enough money left over at the end of the month. I was also still in the process of rebuilding my confidence after a devastatingly stressful job I worked from 2009 to 2014 that robbed me of nearly all my waking hours and extinguished most of my hope. I was getting to the point where I found myself frequently thinking this is going to be my life, I was almost ready to settle. I feared my best days were already behind me.

“The only real prison is fear and the only real freedom is freedom from fear.” ~Aung San Suu Kyi

I had read James Altucher’s book Choose Yourself in 2015 and connected with it in such a way that it was as though it set me on fire. I credit that book with reframing my entire mindset and preparing me for the success that was to come. Everything started to change for me after I read it and began applying the principles James taught in the book to my life.

I don’t know if you all felt it too but back in 2016 there was such tremendous energy in the world. The optimism was palpable. Another follower of James’ social media page dropped a link to this new social media site that paid you to blog. After a few password issues I wrote my first post on July 5th, 2016. It was a roller coaster at first. I wasn’t getting engagement at all for the first few weeks but then one Saturday morning I woke up to discover I had made the equivalent of three days worth of pay of THIS POST. Then it happened again a few days later with a second post.

“May we think of freedom as not the right to do as we please, but as an opportunity to do what is right.” ~ Peter Marshall

The rest of the summer of 2016 was a complete blur. Reader engagement just exploded from there. I went on to live out what was the best year of my life and I will always be exceedingly grateful for every bit of it. Finding this place and experiencing that success was the culmination of every professional aspiration that I could imagine. Making good friends with people from all over the world has always been the icing on the cake.

I always get sentimental in the days leading up to the fifth of July. Hive literally opened the door to freedom for me that’s why I’ll always consider July 5th my personal Independence Day.

“In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.” ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

I don’t say this to brag but to remind us of something. Let my experience serve as an example of how this platform has the potential to change lives. Despite how easy it might be for us to forget, let us never lose sight of how much power Hive has.

Just like this crazy world we all live in, Hive is constantly evolving. I've seen some great things happening here lately. Faces have come and gone. The platform is almost indistinguishable from the place it was when I began my journey six years ago and it'll be different a year from now. In every given moment it's up to each us to figure out how use to use this platform to its greatest potential.

So I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support you’ve shown me all these years. None of us know what the future holds but one thing is for certain, you have made this writer’s dreams come true, seriously every single one.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Upgrade your life experience today for only $15.99 on Amazon.com.

Opportunities come and they go, but it all depends on which one we grab, and that one is often the key that opens the doors to our desperate souls. It can appear in many forms and you found it in a book. They say that when the student is ready the master will appear.
You were ready and I am happy that you were given the key to a new life.

Thank you! So true, opportunities are almost endless. Often it's our mindset that attracts us to them or makes it seem like they are impossible.

Agreed and so sad that some do not know that nothing is impossible.

Congrats on your anniversary here! That is a really inspirational story. I honestly can't remember too much about 2016. I was involved in blockchain then, but I know you are saying it was a lot more than that. I'd have to say I was far more isolated from a lot of things back then.

Thank you! 2016 seems like ions ago, doesn't it? I'm glad you found your way here!

Congrats in advance, six years journey in the blockchain is not easy at all especially maintaining the consistency which is awesome to appreciate. Keep up the good work and congratulations.

Thank you! In many ways it feels like a lifetime compressed into those six years.

Congratulations on your 6 years anniversary of blogging. Am pretty sure the journey has not been easy but in the end its really worth it.

Enjoy the moment

Thank you!

You've got to be one of the coolest, most inspirational people I know. Just to get up one day, and do what you did. That's... rare. Extremely, extremely rare. Congratulations :) Here's to seeing all the places you've ever dreamed of seeing, at least once (I know you've got the writing covered, already!).

Thank you so much my friend, I really appreciate that. It scared the sh!t out of me to take that leap and in retrospect it was probably the least responsible decision I've made in my entire adult life. I was lucky though, it worked out.

I've thought about this a lot...if I hadn't been working on the HardFork Series at the time I wouldn't have done it. I felt in my bones that Netflix was going to pick it up. HardFork ended up being disappointing in a variety of ways then fizzling out a little over a year after I quit but it was the catalyst that finally pushed me out of that pattern that was holding me back.

I just came across the very last pay stub that I got from Securian (the company I worked for). After 23 years of working for that company I was only getting paid $24 an hour. Looking back across the past six years and how different my life is now I still have to pinch myself. Sometimes it doesn't even seem real.

This is truly a twist of fate. This site has helped many ordinary people improve their financial situation and make new friends from all over the world.
All the best and good luck!

Thank you! I very much agree. I believe Hive hasn't even seen its best days yet. There's much more to come. I feel so fortunate to have been part of the story. : )

In 2016 I was not familiar with the blockchain world. I was new to the blockchain world in 2018. I think you were very lucky to know the blockchain world first and now I have you as someone who has been successful. .Hopefully in the future various successes will come your way. Hope you have a wonderful day.

You were still very early to blockchain. Thank you Eliana! I hope you enjoy your week!

I remember that post. I had just joined Steemit and stumbled across it. I think that might have been when I clicked the follow button on you. ;-)

(or it might have been when I saw your bicycle)

Happy Indy-PEN-dance Day!!!

Thanks for being amongst my first followers! We've all made some great memories here.

Congratulations to those of you who have joined for a very long time, and have spent a lot of time both for yourself and also for others who have helped friends. I am happy to be with you and my prayers for you so that you are always in good health and can participate in activities smoothly.for the picture above I really like seeing the perfect sky condition decorated with fireworks.

Thank you so much!

You're welcome

Wow. Six years is not something to have joke with. You have really come a long way I must confess

It's weird, those six years sometimes feels it passed in the blink of the eye and then sometimes it feels like forever. Thanks!

Wow... That's 6 years of hardwork, dedication, resilience and experience. You have always been a shining light, a pace setter and your influence spreads like fragrance. Thank you for always giving your best and for setting a worthy example to many of us. I can never forget how amazing you have been over the years and how I always enjoy your posts with valuable lessons to learn which shaped me to giving my best and never dropping the standards too.

Congratulations, sir. More to come.

Thank you man! I'm so grateful people are still reading and voting on my stuff. This platform was a Godsend for me during the isolation of the pandemic. I appreciate your support throughout the years!

You are an incredible and wonderful person sir, you deserve every good thing coming your way. More to come too.

I think we are lucky to have been on HIVE (Steemit back then) for years because many people are still not aware of this priceless blockchain. However, I have not improved my account much in four years, but it is good to be here.

I believe in HIVE that it will be a great revenue generating in long-term. Hope we will see many more people living off HIVE in the future.

If this has taught me anything it's that being an early adopter of something you believe in is priceless. I'm sorry to hear your account hasn't grown. Mine grew the first few years but now gets about 1/10th of the engagement that it used to. That's okay, others are getting the spotlight now and I'm happy for them. This is a great place to be.

Congratulations @ericvancewalton! You received a personal badge!

Feedback from the July 1st Hive Power Up Day
The 7th edition of the Hive Power Up Month starts today!

First off, congratulation for hanging around for over 6 years. It's really an achievement considering how things quickly pop up and spontaneously die on the internet. So filtering it out gems from the ocean of the internet is not a small thing. And crypto and Blockchain are here to stay for uncountable years to come.

I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one.

For a few people that might sound like an imaginary world, but for me, that's the world that inspires me to live this life. A world that is becoming more and more toxic & synthetic, it's a poetry, it's that philosophy that sails us to a different dimension. If I could close my eyes and reproduce that poetry, that would have a soothing hypnotic effect. I would like to immerse in that world(be it imaginary) again and again.

Please write it again and again Eric, you do not know you give a new lease of life to many.

Thank you! Opportunities don't last long in this world. When it happens to you, you have to seize it as though your life depends on it. I agree about what you say about poetry, it's like looking at the world through a different lens. The world is so much better when you're viewing it through that lens isn't it?

Congratulations for the six years anniversary. I registered on the Steem/Hive blockchain on 2017.05.17, so approximately one year later. I found it by searching for something GPU/mining related thing on the Google, and I clicked on an article, which was on Steemit. At first I have not even know that I am on Steemit. But I immediately registered after I finished reading the article. I do not remember the article, nor the author, neither that whether I upvoted (or commented under) that article, or not.

It is good to see old users being still active. I saw thousands of people leaving the platform over the years. Even I left a few times, but I always returned. My followers not so much. Most of them are inactive nowadays. They left the platform years ago.

Thank you @xplosive. You were fairly early as well in the scheme of things. I've seen many cycle on and off this platform too. Some people become genuinely disinterested in blogging after a while and others let their emotions get the best of them and they "rage quit". I think the longest stretch I've been away in six years is around twenty days. This place always calls me back.
