Did you know the first steam-powered excavator was developed in 1796 by the Scottish inventor, James Watt? Boy, have we come a long way since then!!!
While excavators have many uses now, in the 19th century, they were the first high-powered construction equipment meant to dig and move earth, like soil and rocks. The development of the excavator contributed significantly to the process of industrialization as they aided in construction of canals, railway lines, mines and industrial plants.
In the 1930's it became cheaper to run diesel and electric machines, so the steam engines came to an end. Over the last (almost) 100 years, the excavator has evolved greatly - now being made by many different companies, in many sizes and models, with many attachments. This has expanded the field in which the excavator can be used in, although, it's main job is still to dig.
Some of the jobs that we use our excavator for include (but are not limited to): Site work, lot clearing, foundation prep, driveways, septic system installation and repair, ditching, and more!
We hope everyone has a great weekend. Suggestions for next week's Fun Friday are welcomed 🙂
