The Angel of the North

in #travel3 years ago

A few days ago I took a trip to the North of England. It's many years since I visited this part of the country.

The photo below is astonishing to me as it was pitch black when was it taken on an iPhone 10. It was barely visible.
I tried to get a photo with my dslr but it was far to dark.

The Angel of the North

This is the Angel of the North a massive sculpture by Antony Gormley. It sits atop a hillside on the A1 road in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England.

Completed in 1998, it is believed to be the largest sculpture of an angel in the world.

I didn't know it at the time but this turned into an epic adventure.
This is just a sample of upcoming posts on the trip.

Below is a view of the 'lake' at Cragside. All is not what it seems. All will be revealed in future posts.

For my north American friends this view reminds me of scenes from both Canada and the giant redwoods of California. A real Bob Ross moment for

We got as far north as Holy Island Lindisfarne on the Northumberland coast just 67 miles short of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Each of these places have fascinating historic stories which will be interesting for you to read I hope. They blew my mind and this is just a fraction of the things photographed on this trip.

To all my friends rest assured I've fully recovered from Covid19.
We are now free to travel again 😂👍

Thanks to everyone for your support over the years it's been quite a long journey for us all.

We've driven up the A1 lots of times and it's always good to see the angel. Your picture came out great. Phone cameras are so good now. We've been to Lindasfarn too, but always need the check the tides. Some great places to visit up there.

Hi Steve, I can't believe that it came out as bright as it did. It was so dark.

Lindasfarn has been on my list to see for decades and we finally got there just in time as the tide was going out.

We drove across and filmed it. I'll put a video together about the Holy Island history.
It's brilliant up north 🤯👍

I've heard some people try to beat the tide and lose out.

Not that I really like the guy, but Michael Portillo's travel programmes show some interesting places to visit. He was up that way the other week.

It's a safe causeway if we stick to the tide tables but there are always idiots that think they have some kind of magic that protects them lol

Portillo up north? Whatever next? Honest Boris? 😂😂👍

Portillo makes me laugh as he wanders around in his fancy jackets and colourful trousers. I would think some areas of the country would have reasons to dislike him for what he and his mates did when they were running things.

Yep the Tories have got a lot to answer for including their dress sense 😂😂 boris looks like a bag of crap tied up in the middle!

I would think some areas of the country would have reasons to dislike him for what he and his mates did when they were running things.

The oven ready Brexit deal turned into a Turkey shoot of British businesses.

I'm amazed at all the brexiteers that are now going bankrupt and looking for sympathy and another bailout? #dumbfuckery
Fishermen Farmers, Road haulage all screwed.

I'm not holding my breath that this current crop of crooks will be out of office anytime soon?

It's shameful that people see this lot as the best option. I get more political on Twitter, for what good it does. If people are reading the main papers they get few a diet of Tory worship and lies. Bah, it makes me angry!

I know what you mean. Who voted for these clowns? No one I ever met admitted to voting for Thatcher or the current crop of toerags?
What a shambles they have made of everything.

I've been to see the Angel of the North. A very impressive monument. As you say it is a wonderful sight on approach to Gateshead on the A1.

We went right up to the monument. It's massive up close. The photo doesn't do it justice but I was impressed that we got the shot as it was totally dark up on the mound and yet it looks like daytime. Amazing what these smartphones can do these days.

Hey good to see you. I have to say I was getting a little worried. Have you kicked the coof?

Hi Paul yep it's gone at last. Having a covid cold for over a month was weird. Just felt exhausted all the time. I'm firing on all cylinders now. 👨‍💻😂👍

I love Farne Island (Lindisfarne) - and that wee castle is well worth the visit. I love the idea of how you have to make a mad dash over the road, see all the stuff and get back again before the tide comes in and covers the road ! I'm hoping to get stuck there one time just so I can spend all night drinking in the pub !

Hi hoosie, it sure is an adventure to get across that rickety road of a causeway. The middle section is falling apart.
The little town is so cute too. Getting stuck there is always an option if there's a pub 😂👍

The farne islands are stunning and great for birdwatching. Worth another longer visit for sure.
