AD&D 1E - DMG - APENDIX A - DAY 1

in #ttrpg3 years ago

I was cleaning out my bookshelf and came across my old copy of the 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons DM's Guide.

So I started flipping through the pages and came upon Appendix-A and with it a flood of memories. I remember using this appendix to create random dungeons (lots of dungeons).

Pg. 169 DMG
Appendix-A is a random dungeon generator designed to help a DM when they need a "quick" dungeon or maybe to help get the creative juices flowing. So I began thinking maybe it would be fun to roll up a random dungeon right here on Hive, for old times sake.

The first thing to do is layout the ground rules. Taking a look at the introductory paragraphs for Appendix A (image to the left) you will see the following:

Discretion must prevail at all times

This will be rule 1, 2 & 3 and I interpret it to mean if I don't like the outcome of a roll I will change it however I see fit.
Rule 4 - The dungeon will be sized to fit only one sheet of graph paper
Rule 5 - I will use Google "Dice Roller", Wizards Dice Roller, or actual dice what ever works best.
Rule 6 - Have Fun. If no one is having fun this is a complete waste of time.

STEP 1

Roll for the starting area. In the DMG we are presented with five different starting areas

We will use the online dice roller to determine which one we will start with.

1 is rolled on the d5

So at this point our dungeon looks like this:

Next time we will need to begin rolling on the tables to determine what lies beyond rooms 1, 2 and 3.

I will post the images of the remainder of appendix-A showing all of the tables.
I am not sure at this point if I will roll for the contents of the various rooms, as that can become quite time consuming.

If anyone likes what I am doing here and wants to see the contents or has any other suggestions throw them in the comments below.

I will try and get each step out on a regular basis till the dungeon is complete, hopefully 2 to 3 per week.

These kobolds don't stand a chance against this dragon. I'm guessing it is a green dragon because it is breathing a cloud of gas.
