Famous US film maker Oliver Stone's 2016 Documentary 'Ukraine on Fire' contains important information on the history of Ukraine and it's relationship with Russia. He interviews Putin and key Ukrainian political figures to show some of the origins of the issues today - including the Nazi movement, the revolutions and the often complicated and violent political landscape. Making sense of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine can be difficult as sometimes it can seem that everyone is either lying or telling half truths, but this documentary is useful for those unfamiliar with the topic.

Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has taken many people by surprise and if we listen to his speeches and interviews, plus those of other members of the Russian government, their apparent motives stay consistent but need to be explained. At times they seem to make claims that don't add up and at other times they totally fail to fill in important details in what they are saying. This documentary goes some way to helping us understand why this is.
'Ukraine on Fire' is around 5 years old but the message is very relevant to today. In general, the movie is sympathetic to Russia's current narrative and highlights that Ukraine has much stronger Nazi roots than 'western' media ever really portrays. In particular, the US involvement in manipulating the people and politics of Ukraine is laid bare and this is something that Oliver Stone has often aimed to do in his other movies. While some reviewers of the movie understandably claim the documentary is biased, at the same time there are many historic details presented (and important interviews) that need to be seen/heard and understood if we are to understand the full context in Ukraine.
Some highlights of the claims in the movie:
- Ukraine had strong support for Nazism in world war 2 and 80,000+ soldiers formed in Ukraine to support the German Nazis - often having a reputation for being ruthless abusers of minorities. It is estimated that they killed 150,000 to 200,000 minority people and Jews during the war era as part of a large scale genocidal mission.
- During that war, these Ukrainian nationalists/Nazis changed sides and started fighting the Russian army and Germans equally once they realized Germany was losing.
- The Ukrainian nationalists continued fighting the Soviets until the mid 1950s.
- The CIA in the US had strong ties with the Ukrainian nationalists/Nazis and their leader Stepan Bandera. Bandera is the source of the term 'Banderites' which Putin and others in the Russian government have been heard using recently, it essentially refers to Ukrainian nationalists, which Putin associated with Nazis.
- Ukrainian Nazis escaped prosecution in the Nuremberg war criminal trials after World War 2.
- Violence against peaceful protesters during the 'Euromaydan' protests is claimed to have been started by Serhiy Lyovochkin - a character with close ties to US politicians.
- The 'Color revolutions' In Ukraine and elsewhere appear to have been funded by US Government and George Soros organizations.
- A leaked call between high level US government agents seemed to show 'Neo-Cons' planning a coup or restructuring the Ukrainian government.
- The split in Ukraine between pro-Russian groups and Ukrainian nationalists built up to the formation of the Donetsk separatist space.
- A 'rebellion' in Odessa of separatists was put down by Ukrainian nationalists who petrol bombed protesters, many of which burned to death in a government building.
- The government Neighboring state Georgia was overthrown by a US backed agent and immediately allowed the insertion of NATO weapons next to Russia's border.
Overall, the documentary points towards today's conflict in Ukraine having roots in a complicated combination of actions from the US, NATO, Ukrainian nationalists, Nazis from various regions, Russian interests and those of other nations too.
The situation in Ukraine is complex and it is important consider many sources of evidence if we are to understand what is really going on and how best to help create peace in the region.
