Woodturning with Cheryl… flamed beech bowl with pewter lid

in #woodturning2 years ago

I have been woodturning for about a year now.

I have to admit when I first started out, I wasn’t prepared for just how addictive turning wood actually is!

Since the first (cough) ‘successful’ piece, I had caught the bug. I was scouring YouTube for videos on woodturning, draining Pinterest for ideas and practically dreaming about the subject.

I also joined various groups on Facebook in relation to woodturning to get a feel for what other people were doing. I soon realised there are only a handful of women that actually do woodturning, which is such ga shame as it is so much fun!

I also joined a local club and also realised that not only am I the only woman there, but I am also the youngest by about 30 years! 😂 Everyone was welcoming and wanted to share their knowledge which was amazing.

Here is a video of one of my earlier pieces.

I hope you enjoy the process!

Much love, C and the bulldogs xx

How cool to do that , I would love to try , I would suck but …
I think you need to be strong to resist the pressure of the wood 🪵 turning

You should definitely try if you ever get the chance, it is sooooo much fun! You don't have to be strong as such, you just need to position the tools correctly and safely 😃 fab to see you here ❤️

Oh wow, that bowl is so beautiful. What a wonderful skill to have. I want to see more of your creations xxxx

Thank you! 😃 I will post some more this week hopefully xxx

What a beautiful piece of artwork! I am now following you, and yes, probably a couple more days older than 30 years hahahahaha!!!

Well, one thing I have learned through woodturning is that age is but a number! 😃 nice to meet you!

It's nice to meet you again, I think I had met you at some point on that other blockchain before the hardfork, I remembered your name easily.
I wanted to tell you I have a 1954 ShopSmith that has been polished and powder-coated John Deere green, but I live in a mobile home and have nowhere to put the machine back together, it's got a lathe and chisels, a drillpress, a 4" jointer, 13" sanding disk, 2" drum sander, table saw, etc.
with a whole range of other parts to make it a great machine; just not able to use it.
Oh, and I also gave your current post to Ren of @xcountytravelers and she remembered you, so don't be surprised if she calls on you.
Your post dug up some fantastic and soothing memories of her being with her dad in his shop when he was turning in the garage or shed with his lathe. I believe he also had a ShopSmith, but I could be wrong.
One more thing: we are in the Alliance also, so if you have time drop on in any time, once you are fam, you are always family.

Oh yes I remembe! 😃 please say hi to Ren for me! Turning has so many memories for people, it is amazing the stories I hear from people when I talk to people about the subject. It is a dying art unfortunately, I wish more people would keep the skill alive

That takes some patience. I'd have splinters all over my face.

Haha I did have a piece that flew off the lathe and hit me in the face once! So pleased I had my face shield on 😂 So good to see you here, I notice the Alliance is still running! I may have to reapply if I get time to become a regularly active fam member again ❤️

Awesome work Cheryl! One day I'm going to record a piece I am turning too. But I just don't feel comfortable recording ... lol. Wood turning is so much fun to do, the only thing is that my partner wants more and more every day, week, month ... First we only had a lathe, now we have so much more machinery. But well, as long as we're having fun.

How is your photography? Do you still do that too, and the dogs?

Hey! Good to see you! 😃yes, it really is so much fun.
I haven’t had much time for photography over the last year as I’ve been getting my house ready for selling, then getting ready for the big move, which should happen soon. Yes I still breed health tested bulldogs, we are fighting against bad breeding though and losing unfortunately, but we keep doing our best to try and promote correct breeding and health testing.
What have you been up to?

I see! And I totally feel you. I have been out of photography for quite some time. After Rowan's death I lost the motivation. It's slowly coming back now, but of course now I've taken up the plan that I want new equipment. LMAO, in this financial turbulent times I thought of this plan.

And even though I didn't much with photography, the creativity had to be worked out. So I started to paint a lot. And surprise surprise, my partner and I also started with a lathe, for more than a year now. Also "intarsia", with a scroll saw. Very fun to do.

Besides that the three dogs are keeping me busy. Now even more than before since my Myla is getting really old. She turns 14 in March, and Lana turns 13 in April. Lana also is starting to become older. Skipper is a great dog, he is turning 5 in November.

Where are you going for your big move? Very exciting!

Just moving to a new house, but we are still in the Sherwood Forest area luckily ☺️ I do love my trees! Hehe
