Working From Cafes Just Got "Cheaper"
If you live in England, and you work all day from home - on a computer say, it's not probably cheaper to take your computer (if it's a notebook and not a desktop) to a cafe and work there. Yes you have to buy coffee, and maybe even food but, I did the maths, the cost of keeping the house warm during the day is now more than how much I'd spend on coffee and grub. Besides, it's much warmer at the cafe. Their heating system is 10x more efficient than mine.
Now that I think about it, this is going to be an issue for entrepreneurs that work from home. There are some expenses that you can claim, for tax purposes, but I don't think heating is one of them. Things that are not exclusively for work purposes even though you use them for work, like your mobile phone for example, or your internet cost, are not claimable in most circumstances.
Since COVID, many companies have transitioned their employees to WFH. I wonder what provisions they have in place to compensate for the high cost of heating these days. The government has stepped in to relieve some of of the pressure by subsidising electricity for most people in England, but gas and water bills are still sky high. So, yeah, the cafe is going to be seeing a lot more of me this winter :)
Peace & Love,
