Before diving into our weekly recap, here's a fascinating factoid about artificial sweeteners. You may have heard some concerns around aspartame – one of the most common artificial sweeteners. Recent studies on mice have linked it to potential learning and memory disruptions source. Long-term tracking in humans also suggests possible increased cancer risks source.
Here's the crazy part – aspartame appears to alter gut microbes in peculiar ways! So it could affect our mood and health by disrupting that delicate internal ecosystem. Definitely makes you think twice about popping those little blue packets. source 🤔
However, not all artificial sweeteners are bad news. There's increasing interest in “monkfruit” sweetener, a low-calorie option from an Asian melon. “monkfruit” may actually create good gut microbes and has no known drawbacks so far! source
