Hello, everyone!
I hope you are well or are trying to be well. I'm feeling a bit better today. I feel better psychologically because I'm allowed to drink coffee. I missed it. And of course I feel more energetic physically.
Today we are going to Hierapolis with you! I know I said last week that we would continue to visit Izmir Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, but for now Hierapolis seemed more attractive.
We know Pamukkale with its healing waters. And also its famous white travertines. I went to that famous place that we saw in our books in high school. I am very happy for that. There is also a museum of this ancient city. I went there too, but this will be a separate chapter.
Now let's start to Hierapolis!
Balloon Surprise
Since we set off early in the morning, we were faced with a wonderful view. Normally we know this view all over the world around Urgup-Cappadocia, but at the same time these balloons fly almost everywhere in Türkiye, not only in Urgup. I had the chance to capture this shot and I loved it.
I loved the fact that there was a friend of mine there and he was trying to capture the same photo frame with me. Of course, I also captured one frame without him, but I think it is better with him.
I wish I had the time and money to see Hierapolis from above. It is a very big place and it was difficult to visit without a car and we didn't have time to visit all of it. The head guide left us alone by giving us time and place. That's why I travelled a bit disorganised, but that's okay. I am satisfied with the way I am.
The Southern Byzantium Gate
We have come to the main entrance, friends. Of course, before going inside, I tried to take a photo of the beautiful lights given by the sunrise, I can't lie 😂
I wish the shadow of my hand wasn't on my face. It would have been beautiful. Let's keep this here as a memory.
After this, we entered through the Southern Byzantine Gate.
As you can read if you zoom in on the photo on the left, this gate is not the only gate built in this way, but it is low. In other words, it is possible to say that rulers or people of lower rank usually entered and left the city from here.
The bigger and more magnificent a building is, the more it belongs to someone of a higher rank. For example, the famous Hadrian's Gate. He even gave his name to the gate.
Theatre and Skenefrons
‘Skene’ means stage building and “frons” means facade. It is possible to simply say that this part is the main element of the stage building. Since it was located behind the stage, it was also used as a decorative background for the plays staged in the theatre.
This Skenefrons has Roman characteristics. It is detailed with sculptures and reliefs, which we can easily call engravings.
Although I didn't have time to go down, they looked quite dramatic even from where I was. It is enough to think about the effect of this on the theatre. They did these things well in their time.
It is calculated that the theatre can seat 12.000-15.000 people. It is quite big and has typical Roman theatre features. Well, how do we understand this? Very simple. If the theatre is not leaning against the slope, but upright upwards as if a building was erected, we know that it is Roman, and if it is leaning against the slope, we know that it is Greek. The technology of the period plays a very big role in this.
And for some reason I also like this photo, it has an epic feel to it.
Ploutonion (Plutonium) Sanctuary
This area is dedicated to Hades, the God of the Dead, in a way that I believe is rare. You can even read in some sources that this is the gateway to Hades' Land of the Dead, which was also written on the information board, but I can't remember which one.
So, why was this place thought to belong to Hades? Because of the poisonous gases coming out of the underworld. Since they thought that Hades was an open door from the Underworld to the Mortal World, they attributed this part to Hades, Pluton in Roman Mythology. It should not be very difficult to understand that this is where the name comes from.
In the 9th-10th centuries, a mill was built here. For what? Olive oil, of course. Could anything more valuable have been made in the sanctuary?
There is also a very detailed sanctuary. There are many details such as prayer areas, sculpture area, but unfortunately I could not visit it in detail because my time was limited.
Hamam
There is a bath, which is a must for both Greek and Roman periods. I didn't have the chance to see the latrina, but I was able to see the bath, albeit briefly. Unfortunately, there is not much left. Anyway, I would have preferred to see Skenefrons before a simple bath. There are many baths especially around Ankara. We even went to one in particular, which I will share with you later.
Last But Not Least
Last time I came to the centre area to go to the museum and guess what I came across.
A HUGE ROoster! Yes, we as Turks know that Denizli is famous for its rooster, but visitors don't know. That's why I think it is a nice detail rather than any fountain.

It's a cute group photo, but there are cuter ones.
I'm afraid I've either been invisible or half my head has come off in this series. I'm sorry. I think it's a pretty good idea.

Umarım iyisinizdir ya da iyi olmaya çalışıyorsunuzdur. Bugün biraz iyiyim. Kahve içmeye iznim çıktığımdan psikolojik olarak kendimi daha iyi hissediyorum. Özlemişim. Bir de tabii fiziksel olarak daha enerjik hissediyorum.
Bugün sizinle Hierapolis'e gidiyoruz! Biliyorum geçen hafta İzmir Arkeoloji ve Etnografya Müzesi'ni gezmeye devam edeceğimizi söylemiştim fakat şimdilik Hierapolis daha çekici göründü.
Pamukkale'yi şifalı suları ile biliyoruz. Bir de o meşhur bembeyaz travertenlerini. Lise zamanında kitaplarımızda gördüğümüz o meşhur yere gittim. Çok mutluyum bunun için. Bir de bu antik kentin bir müzesi var. Oraya da gittim ama bu ayrı bir bölüm olacak.

Balon Süprizi
Sabah erken saatlerde yola çıktığımızdan olsa gerek harika bir manzara ile karşı karşıya kaldık. Normalde bu manzarayı bütün dünya Ürgüp-Kapadokya civarlarında biliyoruz ama aynı zamanda bu balonlar neredeyse Türkiye'nin her yerinde uçuyor, sadece Ürgüp'te değil. Bende bu kareyi yakalama şansı buldum. Çok da sevdim.
Orada bir arkadaşımın olup benimle aynı fotoğraf karesini yakalamaya çalışıyor oluşunu çok sevdim. Tabii bir tanede onun olmadığı bir kare yakaladım fakat bence onun olduğu daha iyi.
Keşke zamanım ve param olsaydı da Hierapolis'i yukarıdan görebilmeye şansım olsaydı. Çok büyük bir yer ve araçsız gezmek zordu ki zaten her yerini gezmeye zamanımız da yoktu. Baş rehber bize zaman ve mekân vererek yalnız bıraktı. Bu yüzden de biraz dağınık gezdim ama olsun. Ben hâlimden memnunum.
Güney Bizans Kapısı
Asıl girişe gelmiş bulunuyoruz arkadaşlar. Tabii içeri girmeden önce gün doğumunun verdiği o güzel ışıklar bir fotoğrafımı çekmeye çalıştım yalan söyleyemeyeceğim 😂
Keşke elimin gölgesi yüzüme vurmasaymış. Çok güzel olabilirdi. Bu da burada anım olarak kalsın işte.
Buradan sonra ise Güney Bizans Kapısı'ndan giriş yaptık.
Sol taraftaki fotoğrafı biraz yakınlaştırırsanız okuyabileceğiniz gibi bu kapı, bu şekilde yapılmış tek kapı değil fakat alçak. Yani buradan genellikle rütbesi daha düşük olan yöneticilerin ya da halkın şehre giriş ve çıkış yaptıklarını söylemek mümkün.
Bir yapı ne kadar büyük ve şatafatlı ise o kadar rütbeli birisine aittir. Mesela meşhur Hadrian Kapısı. Kendisi kapıya adını dahi vermiş.
Tiyatro ve Skenefrons
"Skene" sahne binası anlamına gelirken "frons" kelimesi cephe anlamına geliyor. Basitçe bu kısmın sahne binasının ana unsuru olduğunu söylmek mümkün. Ayrıca sahnenin arkasında yer aldığından tiyatroda sahnelenen oyunların dekoratif bir arka planı olarak da kullanılırdı.
Bu Skenefrons Roma Dönemi özellikleri taşıyor. Heykel ve kolay bir şekilde işlemeler diyebiileceğimiz rölyeflerle detaylandırılmış.
Aşağı inecek kadar zamanım olmasa da bulunduğum kısımdan dahi oldukça dramatik görünüyorlardı. Bunun ise tiyatroya etkisini düşünmek bile yetiyor. Zamanında bu işleri güzel yapıyorlarmış.
Tiyatronun 12.000-15.000 kişilik olduğu hesaplanmış. Oldukça büyük anlayacağınız ve tipik Roma Tiyatrosu özelliklerini taşıyor. Peki, bunu nasıl anlıyoruz? Çok basit. Eğer tiyatro yamaca yaslı değil de sanki apartman dikilmiş gibi yukarı doğru dik bir şekilde ise Roma, yamaca yaslı ise Yunan olduğunu biliyoruz. Dönemin teknolojisi bu konuda çok büyük bir rol oynuyor.
Bir de nedense bu fotoğrafı da seviyorum. Epik bir havası varmış gibi geliyor.
Ploutonion (Plutonium) Kutsal Alanı
Bu alan nadir bir şekilde olduğunu inandığım şekilde Hades'e yani Ölüler Tanrısı'na adanmış. Hatta buranın Hades'in Ölüler Diyarı'na açılan kapı olduğunu bazı kaynaklarda okuyabilirsiniz ki aynı zamanda bilgilendirme panosunda da bu yazılıydı ama hangisi olduğunu hatırlayamadım.
Peki, neden buranın Hades'e ait olduğu düşünülmüş? Yeraltından çıkan zehirli gazlardan dolayı. Hades'in Yeraltı Dünyası'ndan Ölümlülerin Dünyası'nda açık kalmış bir kapı olduğunu düşündüklerinden olsa gerek bu kısmı Hades, Roma Mitolojisi'nde Pluton'a atfetmişler. Zaten isminin de buradan geldiğini anlamak çok da zor olmasa gerek.
9,-10, yüzyıllarda ise buraya bir değirmen kurulmuş. Ne için? Zeytinyağı tabii ki. Kutsal alanda daha değerli bir şey yapılabilir miydi?
Bir de oldukça detaylı bir kutsal alan yapılmış. Dua alanları, heykel bölgesi gibi bir çok detay bulunuyor fakat zamanım kısıtlı olduğu için çok detaylı bir şekilde gezemedim ne yazık ki.
Hamam
Bir hem Yunan hem de Roma döneminin olmazsa olmazı olan hamam var. Latrina'yı görme şansım olmadı fakat hamamı kısa da olsa görebildim. Ne yazık ki çok fazla bir şey kalmamış. Zaten basit bir hamamdan önce Skenefrons'u görmeyi tercih ederdim. Hamamlar özellikle Ankara civarlarında oldukça var. Hatta birine özellikle gittik ki daha sonra bunu sizinle de paylaşacağım.
Son Olarak
En son müzeye gidebilmek için merkez alana geldim ve bilin bakalım ne ile karşılaştım.
KOCAMAN BİR HOROZ! Evet, biz Türkler olarak Denizli'nin horozu ile meşhur olduğunu biliyoruz fakat ziyaretçiler bilmiyor. Bu yüzden bence güzel bir detay olmuş herhangi bir çeşmedense.
