A letter that arrived yesterday was written 5 years ago. I was nervous when the year of the letter stated 2020. This could be some sort of joke or what? The delivery man made me sign a document and left without a word.
As I held the envelope, my eyes widened in shock. Why had it taken so long to reach me? Imagine 5 good years. What if something had happened before now? What if I was dead? I muttered words as I opened the envelope.
As I began to read, tears welled up in my eyes. My uncle's words, penned five years ago, spoke directly to my heart.
"Dear Fred," the letter started, "I'm sorry it has taken so long for you to receive this. I did it for your benefit, to protect you from those who might come after you."
My uncle revealed that he knew my cousins hated me, despite being his children. They had neglected him during his illness, while I had cared for him selflessly.
"I'm grateful for your sacrifice, Fred," he wrote. "I know you might have felt I didn't give you what you deserved, but you are dear to my heart. That's why I'm giving you a small piece of land, just so my children won't suspect and gang up against you."
My uncle explained that he had given his million-dollar assets to his children to divert their attention from me. But on the piece of land he gave me, he had buried a box containing the key to a mansion in Lagos and gemstones worth multimillions of dollars.
"Get that box, Fred, and start a new, powerful life. I love you, even in death. Remain blessed."
As I finished reading, tears of joy streamed down my face. My uncle's letter had revealed a shocking truth, one that would change my life forever.
