When I was just a child of about 7 or 8 years old (I'm talking about the late 70's of the last century) the town's urban area grew towards the southern edge... I remember that some of my father's friends built new houses there, they were mostly large orange and tobacco plantation owners who built large colonial-style houses and also the houses of some of their trusted workers, there in that area.... This was an urban sprawl made up of people associated with the town's booming agricultural and livestock economy, which meant that many people associated with those activities had ample resources to build their homes on the edge of town closest to their properties in the valley to the south... The municipality immediately took charge of the urban planning, and so an area of several newly-planned blocks became known as: ‘El barrio de los hacendados’ (the landowners' quarter)... But this is no longer the case...

The economic boom in the town continued even during the economic crisis of the mid 80's (which today seems like a trifle compared to the horrors that our country has lived through in the last quarter of a century)... At that time, in the new streets to the south of the town, there was also a proliferation of large and medium-sized grocery stores, all well stocked and run by their owners who, by the way, lived in the same area... There were also half a dozen shops selling farm supplies and spare parts for all types of vehicles and agricultural tractors... No one had to go to the capital city for these things, now it was possible to find them in the village!... Large repair shops for agricultural machinery also operated in these streets, many of them sponsored by the same landowners who lived there....

Everything in that southern neighbourhood went along quite normally, until the severe downturn in the local economy began at the turn of the century... Many things happened that led to the collapse of trade in items such as oranges and tobacco, the cost of inputs increased dramatically, the country was plunged into an unprecedented economic meltdown, and small towns like this one were the first to feel the brutal impact of the economic, political and social crisis.... Today the streets of the once prosperous neighbourhood south of town dramatically reflect the reality here after 25 years of economic decline.... My photos, these photos that I share with you today, attest to this....

There is something so moving and human in these photos, and the mysterious black and white leaves me with feelings that are hard to describe. Excellent work

Thank you very much for visiting and appreciating my work @soyernesto friend... Recording the most uncomfortable realities is always something I like to do, maybe it's a bit "nihilistic" on my part hehehe :), but I love photographs with drama ;)... I'm glad you liked this work and that it had an emotional effect on you...

With your photographs you show faithfully what you say, the consequences towards the decadence of what once those places were prosperous.

It is a type of photography that is sometimes complex to do, because I knew this town in its heyday and now I see it collapsing irreversibly... But that's what street photographers are for! :)... To record from an intimate point of view, everything that happens around!... Thank you very much for your visit and appreciation @wilfredocav friend!

Hello my friend. I came to see your impressive photos of Montalbán. You've shared your childhood memories very vividly. And how the town has changed over time. Reading it felt like watching a movie.

It takes great courage to document and share these memories. Despite all the difficulties you've faced. The photos as always, are very impactful. Thank you for sharing these precious memories with us 🤗

Hello @damla friend! That's exactly what I commented to one of my followers friends in previous comments to this one. This is a type of photos that is sometimes "complicated to made" for me, because I knew this place when it was a prosperous and very productive community... Now I have had to see how it slowly declines... But this has undoubtedly made me grow as a person and as a photographer, it has been a visual adventure with ups and downs, but very interesting and it serves as a catharsis almost always... I really appreciate your visit, your motivating comment and your valuable support, I wish you an excellent and bright week! ;)
