Unfortunately, the world has a history of showing abuse of positions of trust and authority, resulting in painful narratives such as the one I heard on the radio this morning(About a Student that was raped by her School Proprietor). That is indeed tragic because trust is what underpins strong and meaningful relationships. When people we usually rely on, like teachers, bosses, or community leaders, fail to act as expected, it dents our sense of security and makes us wary of others.
Such stories are tough to tell, but they show why we need to raise awareness and improve safety. Of course, authorities are not totally untrustworthy, but a little caution is never wrong. With the support of education that alerts children and young people to particular circumstances and encourages them to make thoughtful choices, we may be able to protect them better and equip them with the right tools for dealing with challenging situations.
At its best, trust should empower and uplift a person; it should never be an inroad for someone to exploit. A candid conversation about such matters, however uneasy it may be, will pave the way for a safer world in which people can have mutual trust without fear.
