This is my post for #freewriters 2585 prompt official loser hosted by @mariannewest.

Have you ever heard the saying "I can't win for losing"? This is how I feel trying to save my pineapples. It would be simple if I had new soil to put in the pots. The problem is too much water but the water is not the problem. The soil has broken down to where now it is like mud and holds water like mud. If I could put new soil in them, it would flow through instead of staying in the pot. I have to get it dried out or I will lose them all.

A couple of days ago I moved my pineapple plants and moved them back when my husband said he would cap the sprinkler near them. Yesterday I was working in that area when the other two sprinklers came on and they both reached the pineapples, I forgot they all overlapped each other. I bet you can guess what I had to do.

I moved the the pineapples to the side that has our garden, but I just realized the water has been capped off to them for three days, they should be getting dry and I will need to uncap the sprinkler. I am beginning to feel like an official loser when it comes to trying to save my pineapples. The sprinklers only hit half of the big ones so I did not have as many of them to move, I do not lift them, I have a hook that I pull them with.

I could ask everyone I know to get me a bag of good soil for Christmas but that will not be enough to fill all the pots I have several in 15 gallon pots, I might get 3 or 4 changed out of it. That is what I need for them or find a place where nothing near them needs water and it has to be a sunny place, I am feeling defeated but, I will figure out a way to save them.

Oh. Sorry to hear about your struggles saving the pineapple plants. I hope that you can be a total winner here, instead of being an official loser!

Thanks. If you have ever tasted a home grown pineapple you would know why I love them so much.

The ones you buy in the stores are picked too soon and have not had the time to get sweet.
When I grow them I let them turn orange before picking and then I turn them upside down and let them set for 3 days, this lets the sugars in them spread throughout. You never see fully ripe ones in the store. You can bring one home and in a few days it will turn orange but without ripening on the plant, it will not be sweet.

Oh, really! I think you are 100% correct. We aren't getting such pineapple at the market.

Thanks

I hope you buy one and plant the top, it will take a couple of years to get fruit but well worth it.
Twist the top off of the bought one and set it in the shade for 3 days, or on your countertop, peel off the bottom leaves about 2 inches up, and plant in well draining soil. Water from the top every 3 or 4 days, that is where they get water, not the roots.

it will take a couple of years to get fruit

That's not for me :P I don't know where I will be in the next 2-3 years!

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Maybe one day when you settle in one place.
