My Sewing Progress

Hello beautiful people of the Needlework Community. It feels good to be back here, sharing my progress with you all again. About two weeks ago, I made a post on how I was drawn to utilize the sewing machine nobody seemed to be using in my house. And then, I encountered some challenges and stopped for a while.

I stopped practicing for a while because the needle kept breaking. I already replaced the needle twice. So, to avoid further damage, I stopped.

When I couldn't figure out the cause of the issues I was encountering on my own, I called my cousin who is very familiar with it and asked her to please come around whenever she was free.

So, she came around few days ago and I got back to it. And I got to find out that the reason why the needle kept on breaking and I wasn't able to sew properly was because I wasn't pedalling the machine properly.
She guided my foot with one of hers and I began getting the hang of it.

It took me about one hour to understand the concept. Although, I was still pedalling shakily. I was even hugging the machine, to avoid toppling over.😂 Well, the first thing I mastered was how to pedal the machine with ease.
And when I finally did, I was so happy that I didn't need to hold anything to stabilize myself.

Entonces, ella vino hace unos días y volví a hacerlo.

So, the next step was to learn how to focus on the fabric while pedalling. Doing both of them simultaneously seemed like a hassle but I'm glad I had a patient cousin to help me with it.
I removed the needle and placed a piece of fabric under the presser bar and lowered the presser bar lifter. I gradually pedalled and at the same time imitated sewing the fabric. I tried it a number of times and finally got it.

Then after a while, I put back the needle and passed a thread through it. Then, I started sewing.

Luego, comencé a coser.

Finally, I was able to use a manual sewing machine. I was able to stitch the fabric although I found it hard to maintain a straight line but I didn't beat myself up for it. Learning is a gradual process and I'm glad I'm no longer clueless about the sewing machine like I was last month.

So, currently I'm working on stitching in a straight manner. My cousin advised me to either stitch the fabric with hand in a straight manner or use a tailoring chalk to draw on the material first and then trace it with the machine.

These are samples I tried out. Although, it's not completely straight yet, I'm still working on it.

Thanks to you all in this community for the encouragement when I decided to start my sewing journey.

That's about my progress for now. Thanks so much for reading.

And before you go, do you have any suggestions on things i should try sewing myself as a beginner? I'll really appreciate the suggestions.

I had challenges with using machine too, it took me almost weeks to get used to it. You will definitely master it if you keep trying.

I'm glad I now know the basics. I'll definitely keep on practicing so I can master the art completely. Thank you

Nice post dear
Keep it up

Thank you

The sewing process has its own challenges but you have to continuous practicing to get the experiencie and the results you expect.
Keep working!

I'm not giving up anytime soon. I'm beginning to enjoy it. Thank you very much

Such a sweet post, dear @oluchi31 👋🙌 I love reading about your first steps and how you overcame the difficulties of getting started; you inspire me too, to remember to not rush my steep learning curve. Sometimes I get frustrated at my old machine and want it to be more efficient; you remind me to be patient and to really listen to the sewing machine. Great work! Keep sewing!
My only suggestion that you asked for, is to maybe find a favourite (simple!) garment, and to methodically reproduce it. This can be a super-rewarding project!
Many good wishes to you, and thanks for sharing 🤗

Ohh really! Thank you so much. I didn't know I already became an inspiration to someone. Thank you very much for your kind suggestion. I'll definitely try out something easy and share it on the community. I really appreciate you sweet words

Learning to use a manual machine can be tough at first but you'll soon master it with practice.

Your sister already guided you enough. Drawing lines in fabric and following the lines is a very good idea.
