Processed Meat Linked to Dementia...?

in #health13 days ago

Damn you Greggs, that cheap morning breakfast deal with yer sausage or bacon bap and a latte for only £3 you've been condemning us all to a later life of demented misery!

It turns out that a diet high in bacon may increase your risk of dementia,

NB It's not exclusively bacon, it's the broader category of processed red meat more generally. So it's not just yer bacon that's gonna kill your brain cells, it's yer sausage too.

The data....

There's a handy data set on diet in the US in which 130K people have answered questions about their diets on a regular basis for over two decades, with an average age of 49.

Analysis of this data by a team from Harvard, MIT, and Mass General Brigham, found that those who ate two 85 gram servings of processed red meat a week had a 14% higher risk of dementia than those who ate only three such servings a month.

They also found that replacing one helping of processed meat a day with nuts, legumes, or fish would reduce the risk of dementia by around 20%.

There are a number of factors that could be behind this correlation such as:

  • the preservatives used in processed meat. For example nitrites have been previously been found to be associated with neurotoxicity,
  • or higher levels of salt which can raise blood pressure, which can damage blood vessels, including those in the brain.

Or this could just be spurious correlation...

Looking back at the above data that's A LOT of meat for a relatively small increase in risk... we're going from three a month to eight a month, that's almost trebling the amount to get an increase in risk of dementia of just 14%.

Or there could be a range of other factors which heavier meat eaters have in common which explains the higher rates of dementia.... compared to those practically vegetarians at the other end of the scale!

Final Thoughts...

Hmm I am not convinced about the causal link between having two bacon sarnies a week and getting dementia in daily life.

Not quite time to give up on those Gregg's breakfast deals yet!

I have started to consume such foods hardly ever.

I don't know how to mitigate the effects of nitrite. But sodium can be eliminated by drinking water. But you would likely excrete most of it while running.

Yes fair point, all of these are just theories!

Until there are controlled studies about the link of meat and "bad stuff" I would say you are right in not skipping those for breakfast. If you ask someone what do they eat every day, and turns out they have dementia because they get their sausaces in the breakfast I would say that is a very long shot. It could be the drinking they take, the smokes, the bloody sugar they ingest. But naw men, is the meat, by averages.

No, take a nice number of people, seclude them, and meat the hell out of them (pun not intended) during a reasonable time. Now that is an interesting data to see. Which of course, vegetarians won't like.

Fair point about dementia...

I love the idea of that extreme type of study!... 20 years of nothing but meat!

Hey if you ever hear about some experiment like that count me in as a total volunteer. Haha.

I'm gradually switching to fish and poultry from red meat. But it’s damn hard to give up dry-cured sausage and jamon.

Maybe people who eat a lot of bacon don't have much fruit and veg. A lot of veggie alternatives are pretty processed, but I don't know what studies have been done on them. We have 'facon' than is a partial substitute. It's about 30 years since I had any meat.

😲 wow

30 years! Good going!

There must be studies now on those processed vege options. Although they vary - I mean the frozen bean burgers I buy are v different to quorn!

I see cultured meat is being use for pet food now. It will be interesting if they do it for humans too.

Sounds nasty!

The regular meat industry is pretty nasty, but people tend to avoid thinking about it.

Ain't givin' up ma bacon LOL

Me neither! I fancy some now!

Bacon and sausage come from a pig.. it's considered white meat

That's debatable! I guess with sausage it's gonna vary!

Finally—a benefit to not eating meat! Well, I do still eat fish. The mercury there is probably killing me in other ways.

Oh I'm sure there's always something that'll kill you slowly!

Con razón mi esposa me dice q soy medio loco🤣 la carne más sana según nuevas estadísticas son la del cerdo, el pescado y el pollo🐔ssaludos y bendiciones 🙏

Could be lack of stirring in that area could be a factor. Keep your brain busy and it wont get a chance to stagnate.

Dyou think people who eat processed meat are less active mentally....? I mean I don't get the feeling i'm amidst intellectuals when I'm in the Gregg's queue.

I quite like processed meat, perhaps I am doomed?
