Follow Friday: Indecent proposal

The News

Happy Friday! I hope the year is going well for you all so far. 'Interesting times' are ahead, but we have to stay positive. $HIVE had a good start by opening up a big gap from the 'legacy crapcoin'. It has been getting close to the top 300 and ought to be much higher.

Prices from @coingecko

I saw this on the Korean Upbit exchange being hit with penalties for not vetting users properly. A lot of $HIVE gets traded there, but we are seeing good volume elsewhere.

Friday Follows

I have seen a few people come back to Hive recently and some will get featured in these posts. I expect the improved price was a factor for some of them. We need active users creating compelling content and interacting with others. This is why I post about people I find interesting. Your interests are likely to be different, so talk about your favourites. We should not act only in our personal interest.

  • @captaindingus posted about Splinterlands and how some people just take from Hive. As he says, the public blockchain lets us see how others act. You are free to judge them if you so wish.
  • Iranian musician @davidfar is back to share some tunes with us. I like that he goes into detail about the production side.
  • There is also more music from the US via @breakoutthecrazy who have been playing live with a cool guitarist.
  • I had to laugh when @michaelreischer asked some AI about the top Hivers and my name was included.
  • I love to see creative people on Hive collaborating and there is a fun guitar battle from @harbiter and @sunsethunter.
  • We have lots of comics on Hive that I enjoy. Some Hivers even get theirs printed. @arseniclullaby has a lot of experience of that industry and gives some insight into issues with how comics get distributed.
  • I have been enjoying seeing the vintage computers that @makerhacks has. I got into computers during the first boom in home computing when there were lots of competing systems. I got to play with some of them back then, but I sold mine long ago.

The Dog House

It is inevitable that people will try to exploit Hive as there is money to be made. It is supposed to be about people getting rewarded for good content, but we know it is not perfect. It has various defences, but these will get tested by attackers. @pravesh0 reported on a recent case that came to light when an attempt was made to create a fake proposal. If this had been voted through then they would have had some daily income from it.

From what I understand someone created lots of accounts. You can do that if you have enough HP, but some of the onboarding sites can allow you to do it for free. They then accumulated points in Ecency that you get for being active. If you get enough then you can pay for some delegation. Even though thousands of accounts were involved they came nowhere near getting the proposal approved. It is not supposed to be easy and even some established projects struggle to get support.

Giving away anything for free does open up opportunities for abuse, so you may need extra limitations. I know in @risingstargame there are checks that people are not running multiple accounts. Ecency could set thresholds for things like reputation as that can take some work to build up and can be reduced with downvotes if abuse is seen. I am sure that measures with be taken for this case. Whoever did it may have messed up as the community is more aware of the risks now.

The Hive blockchain itself has other protections against people who try to break it. This piece by @andablackwidow goes into depth about this. I did not understand it all, but it is good that others are working on it. As Hive grows it becomes a bigger target. We have seen denial of service attacks happen before.

The End

I continue to be excited about Hive. I have been active here since 2016 and have visited most days as it is fun for me. I am finding some other platforms less appealing these days and would love the cool people I follow there to move over. We need a good community to make that more likely.

As usual I am boosting comment rewards with @commentrewarder on this post. Lazy comments get nothing.

Hive five!

The man behind: @tenkminnows: Helping good Hivers level up

@proofofbrian: A bot that checks for tag typos

#BritList: A monthly list of Hivers in the UK

Sort:

People do exploit Hive with proposals anyway. Just browse the recent posts by @blanchy.

Some proposals are controversial, but they need the support of big accounts to get through. If more people vote up the return proposal then the threshold goes up.

Yep, I do support the Return proposal.

Friday Follows seems like a nice initiative, I had never seen that before :)
Nice to see you are here even longer than I am!
!BEER

I've done this for years after seeing it on other social platforms. It's fun for me and I think it has value for others. I'm happy to see others do similar things.

Can you believe that 9 days ago, I had 8261 votes on my post? I checked the votes, and they were all new with a 25 rep. Thankfully it hasn't happened again.

!BEER

Wow! That must be some kind of record. I guess it didn't add much value, but there are people who control loads of accounts. I guess they must have special tools to control them. I fully expect that we will see more crazy stuff.

Loading...

Oh yes, I suspect that it was only a trial run, and I am now waiting to see what materialises. It was all dust votes, and a first for me to see it.

Hey @steevc, here is a little bit of BEER from @papilloncharity for you. Enjoy it!

If you like BEER and want to support us please consider voting @louis.witness on HIVE and on HIVE Engine.

With Upbit out of the running for awhile, I wonder if that means the end of the pumps? I was enjoying trading those. Oh well. If we can replace the pumps with more steady growth and get rid of the subsequent dumps, all the better!

Loading...

I've not trading, but we need trading options anyway. I'd rather not see too many dumps. Steady growth tends to be more sustainable than quick pumps.

Loading...

It definitely seems with the price going up many of the scammers are coming back to see what they can gain from the platform. Hopefully we can keep them at bay.

Got to stay alert. It's useful to have a week to spot their actions and counter them. I know people have scripts running to spot stuff.

Two things really attracted my attention from what you included, which I missed. @andablackwidow post about new witness options (good to think ahead about such situations), and the news regarding Upbit, which doesn't look good...

Thanks for this news report!

I'm sure I'll learn more from you too. We need more exchanges to trade $HIVE.

As we have seen, more listings help, for sure.

Another interesting list of users to follow, dear Steve! Like you, I noticed some people come back to Hive and maybe it's for the improved price (I remember the old time on steemit when the price of the token went really down and just few users - included you and me ^_^ ) continued to write there and, when the price went up people came back. It's physiological, I think, but I'm happy to see more people here. About the protections against people who try to break Hive, I'm really grateful to people who are working on it. I can't understand all the technical things about it (I can't understand the most part of it), but it's something we have to pay attention.

Those of us who kept posting through the bad times kept earning. The current price is not that important to me as I am all powered up. I think that if we keep building things then the future is bright.

Well, I didnt came back for the price, If it was for the price I can start posting on Steemit, SBD is 6$, When I left hive, I had other missions in real life and a lot of ups and downs in my life that nobody can really understand it if they dont see what happened in my life. But I am not sad about what you said. I just explained that I didnt came back for the price. 🙂

Steemit seems corrupted. A few people make most of the rewards. I know there are some who got 'exiled' from Hive who post there and on Blurt, but Hive has the most going on and you can see that there is a bigger difference in token price now.

Bro you didnt get it, I said it because I didn't came back for price changes.

Sorry I dont wanna make this big but...

because Silvia is commenting on this post that you mentioned "Davidfar came back" and this is her way of welcoming people like me, so her comment seems like an insult to me, but it is ok, whatever anyone Says, I am not what people would label me or anyone who got back here. I respect all. I am not a beggar and if I keep seeing people like this, I will give away all my posts incomes to this system and I leave forever. I am serious about my character and personality this is why I feel bad.

She said 'maybe' and I'm sure price was a factor for some people. I think everyone is entitled to earn from their creativity and that is part of the attraction of Hive. Some also like that it is not run and exploited by big companies.

I'm sure she did not mean to insult you. She has been very encouraging to other creative people over the years.

Of course you should do whatever you feel is right for you, but I hope you stick around.

I too remain excited about Hive. It blows everywhere else away. In some ways I am happy for it to remain niche and in others I would like some more growth. I always end up on the more butnot mental growth side

Loading...

It would change if it got massive, but a lot of people could benefit. I'm fed up with the corporate platforms.

Loading...

I am fed up with the rampant misinformation and chronic celebration of stupidity on them

I just find them low value these days and my time is valuable.

Thanks for mentioning me. I'm going to check the other musicians you presented right away! Always looking for new collabs 😎

It was good to see your jam do so well. I don't play guitar so much lately, but I can enjoy seeing others play. You guys really rocked.

Thanks for collecting those articles together, I wouldn’t have seen the post by @captaindingus with out it, that article made me think a lot about what I want to get from my time on hive and what I can do to be a lot more engaged in the ecosystem

I keep an eye out for interesting stuff as nobody will see everything. I get a lot of other news via @gadrian.

Yes, I have just found Adrian’s Lens articles and picked up on some other great posts from there too.

Do you want to win SOME BEER together with your friends and draw the BEERKING.

Thank you for this rundown ... the update on Upbit is key. It is so wonderful that Hive's Indian and German communities stepped up and got those listings on Mudrex and Bitpanda and Binance offered those flexible savings right on time!

Thank you also for the link to the post by @captaindingus -- light on the dingus, heavy on the captain ... one of the best posts on Hive that I have read about the constant struggle over what rewards people get, how, and what they do with them. The context of Splinterlands and his personal journey, and his grasp of the desperate needs in the world, really humanize the discussion.

I love this community and we have lots of smart people who will try to find solutions to problems. I help out where I can.

Well howdy Steve!

Thank you for this Summary Article and the information you gathered from across the HIVE :)

I have had a ton of comments on the post and one of them is very close to what I am going to suggest as a possible way to help improve the situation caused by "Contests".

Education is almost always the answer but how it is done is very important :)

You can get some great feedback on Hive from smart people. We are pioneers of new economic models and there are bound to be issues. It's interesting to see it all evolve.

Couldn't agree more!

While I am worried about Upbit this was reason I thought to check if i have some Steem left lol - some good old guys there that suffered - interface has not changed and the look is a bit web2 like.

Interesting on comics

We have lots of comics on Hive that I enjoy. Some Hivers even get theirs printed. @arseniclullaby has a lot of experience of that industry and gives some insight into issues with how comics get distributed.

Did you see what @bravetofu was doing related to SPL comics? I like that.

Re @risingstar2 - I stopped long ago and thought I would login again to see if the game still exists - but I was not able to login anymore. Still same drivers behind this?

I have no Steem, so don't care about that thing.

I'd not seen that comic. I have mixed feelings about 'AI' generated art. I can see it used as part of the process rather than having it do everything. We need some human creativity involved.

Rising Star should work via Keychain. If not then ask on their Discord. I keep playing it and there are various different ways to play with seasonal challenges. I am very much a casual gamer.

True on AI general - his post here: https://peakd.com/hive-13323/@bravetofu/making-a-splinterlands-comic-book-with-ai#@uwelang/re-bravetofu-spsaye

Risoingstar - i logged in via keychain but seems am not listed as player anymore.

Steem - I found some good old buddies there I miss on Hive - some of them been punished for nothing - but life is life.

We both know that some people hold grudges and will not forgive previous behaviour. There are people 'over there' who I would love to see on Hive, but they may feel that is not viable. We do have to avoid driving others away. I'm just glad that you are still here despite what you have been through. It tends to just be a few people who really cause the problems.

Thanks for sharing! - @azircon
