Do I Need A New AI Art Generator, Or Do I need To Get Better At Writing Prompts ?

in #bbh22 days ago

I need some help from the Hive mind here (okay, okay, I know it's a bad pun...)

Recently I've been getting increasingly frustrated with the AI art generator I've been using.

I appreciate using an AI art generator at all can be a controversial topic, but I find it useful as a way to rapidly create illustrations for posts here. Sites like Pixabay frequently don't have what I'm looking for, and I'm not rich enough to be able to hire a personal artist !

The AI art generator I've been using for the last year or two is NightCafe Studio. Before that, I used Wombo art, but that also felt like it "went off the boil".

When I look at help screens and forums, the advice is that NightCafe Studio works best with shorter prompts. Most of the images they feature either have their prompts hidden or have very long prompts.

When I try a long prompt, it usually seems to just ignore most of it. When I try a short prompt, I'll usually get something that is beautiful and uses the elements of the prompt, but doesn't match the image I had in my head.

For example this image from NightCafe Studio;

The prompt I used was "a battle between vikings and saxons, on a field beside a river. A viking with an axe defends the low, narrow bridge over the river".

So... it's beautiful and atmospheric, but the axe is just plain weird, and there's no sign of the requested battle !

My wife has the Pro subscription to NightCafe, and is finding the same issues, so it seems unlikely that they are giving free users a deliberately downgraded experience.

The question I've got for the Hive mind is whether there are better AI art generators out there (preferably free ones !), how much do the prompt mechanics differ between generators, and does anyone know of any tutorials that would help me write better prompts ?

I'd love to hear any ideas you've got !
