Once again, Ben and I have been gallivanting around the UK – this time for the launch event of the new ZS from MG!
Now, we’ve had many an adventure in a ZS, and one of the very first big road trips we ever undertook was in the ZS EV – an epic 400 mile journey that showcased that an extended journey in a fully electric vehicle IS doable, and can even be fun!
So what’s new with this version of the MG ZS? Well, for the very first time, it’s available as a Hybrid! Before it was either fully combustion or fully electric, so it’s rather nice to see this new one combining them to offer the best of both. They’ve also tweaked design, and uprated the tech too. Let’s look a little closer…
This new generation ZS doesn’t just build on the solid foundation of its predecessor—it leaps ahead, offering enhanced driving performance, improved fuel efficiency, and a wealth of new tech. If you’re looking for an eco-friendly SUV with impressive features and a price that doesn’t break the bank, the MG ZS Hybrid+ could be exactly what you need. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this new hybrid SUV stand out.
At the heart of the MG ZS Hybrid+ is the brand-new Hybrid+ powertrain, MG’s non-plug-in hybrid technology. First introduced in the MG3 Supermini, this advanced system offers a smooth, refined, and highly efficient driving experience. Unlike plug-in hybrids, the Hybrid+ system doesn’t need to be charged, making it more user-friendly for those who want a hybrid without worrying about charging stations.
The new ZS Hybrid+ combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 102 PS with a 136 PS electric motor, resulting in a total system output of 196 PS and a torque figure of 465 Nm. This makes for an SUV that’s both powerful and responsive, accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 8.7 seconds—pretty impressive for a family-friendly SUV.
It isn’t just about power, though. It’s also designed with efficiency in mind. Thanks to the 1.83 kWh high-voltage battery and 45kW generator, the Hybrid+ system helps the ZS achieve an impressive 55.4 mpg (WLTP combined) and 115 g/km CO2 emissions. This makes the ZS Hybrid+ an attractive option for those looking to reduce their environmental footprint without sacrificing performance or usability.
One of the standout features of the MG ZS Hybrid+ is the ability to switch between multiple driving modes, ensuring that the car adapts to your needs, whether you're zipping through the city, cruising on the motorway, or just pottering around town:
• EV Mode: Running entirely on electric power for short trips around town, perfect for reducing fuel consumption in stop-start traffic.
• Series Mode: The petrol engine runs the generator, powering the electric motor to drive the wheels.
• Series and Charge Mode: The petrol engine powers the generator to both drive the wheels and top up the battery when needed.
• Drive and Charge Mode: The petrol engine powers the car while also charging the battery through the generator.
• Parallel Mode: Both the engine and electric motor work together to power the wheels, delivering maximum performance.
This range of modes allows for a smooth and adaptable driving experience, making it highly flexible whether you’re driving in city traffic or on the open road. The seamless switch between electric and petrol power ensures that the car feels responsive while maximising fuel efficiency.
The MG ZS Hybrid+ isn’t just about what’s under the bonnet—it also brings a fresh new design that’s sharper, sleeker, and more sophisticated. MG has made significant updates to the exterior, giving the ZS a more refined look that sets it apart from other SUVs in the same segment:
Exterior Features
• Front and Rear LED Lighting: Full LED lighting is now standard at both the front and rear of the vehicle, improving visibility while giving the ZS a modern, high-tech look. The projector headlights also feature Intelligent Headlight Control, automatically switching between high and low beams based on oncoming traffic.
• Striking New Wheels: The SE model comes with 17-inch Valiant alloy wheels, while the higher-spec Trophy trim gets a bold set of 18-inch Sabre alloy wheels that really add to the car’s confident stance.
• Sharper Crease Lines: The exterior now features sharper crease lines that run along the sides of the vehicle, giving it a more muscular and dynamic appearance.
• Sleek Roof Rails: Silver roof rails are included as standard, adding both style and functionality—perfect for attaching roof racks for those weekend getaways.
With dimensions slightly larger than its predecessor (the new ZS measures 4,430 mm in length, 1,818 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height), the SUV feels more spacious inside without losing any of its compact charm. The wheelbase has also increased to 2,610 mm, providing extra stability and comfort for passengers.
Inside you’ll find an upgraded cabin with a wealth of new tech and comfort features that make every journey enjoyable for both driver and passengers. At the centre of the dashboard is a new 12.3-inch HD Colour Touchscreen, which includes satellite navigation, iSmart Phone Connectivity, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. This system is intuitive and easy to use, allowing you to access your favourite apps and music seamlessly:
• 7-inch Driver Display: Alongside the main infotainment screen, the driver benefits from a 7-inch display that provides essential driving information, including speed, fuel levels, and range.
• 6-Speaker Audio System: Both trims of the ZS Hybrid+ come with a 6-speaker audio system that delivers a crisp and immersive sound experience.
• Multiple USB Ports: The ZS is equipped with four USB ports (two in the front, two in the rear) and an additional USB charging port in the rear-view mirror—ideal for powering a dashcam.
Designed with practicality in mind, it offers plenty of space for passengers and luggage. Boot space remains class-leading with a 443-litre capacity, providing ample room for family road trips or weekly grocery hauls. Although this means that capacity is slightly smaller than the previous Gen, you’ll find that once the seats are down, it’s more spacious than it’s predecessor.
Both trims feature keyless entry, and the Trophy trim adds extra luxuries like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and driver’s lumbar support. Practical touches like cup holders, a front centre armrest, and a 12V power socket ensure that the ZS Hybrid+ remains convenient for everyday use.
MG’s commitment to safety shines through with the inclusion of MG Pilot, a suite of advanced driver assistance technologies that comes as standard across both the SE and Trophy trims.
New features added to the ZS Hybrid+ include:
• Adaptive Cruise Control: Automatically maintains a safe distance from the car in front, making long motorway journeys easier and safer.
• Active Emergency Braking: Detects pedestrians and cyclists, applying the brakes if necessary to avoid collisions.
• Lane Keep Assist: Helps keep the car in its lane, reducing the risk of drifting.
• Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Alerts you to vehicles approaching from the side when reversing out of parking spaces.
• Blind Spot Detection: Helps you change lanes safely by detecting vehicles in your blind spot.
• Forward Collision Warning: Warns the driver of an impending collision, giving time to react.
• Intelligent Cruise Assist and Speed Limit Recognition: Both help drivers stay within speed limits and maintain safe driving speeds.
And to top it all off, the price - starting at just £21,995.00 for the SE Trim, the ZS Hybrid+ offers exceptional value for money. The higher-spec Trophy Trim is available from £24,495.00.
