According to the job bank's 2023 statistics, over 71% of people are super keen on entrepreneurship. Among this group, about half are still debating whether to dive in, making up 52.9%, while 18.1% have already taken the plunge, which is more than the 62% from last year. Additionally, 14.8% admitted to trying and failing, while 14.2% simply aren't interested in entrepreneurship at all.
So, why the entrepreneurial itch? The job bank's report points out that the main reasons include low salaries and the desire to boost income, accounting for 51.8%. Side investments and personal interests come next, with achieving work-life balance being the third reason. And as for the industries folks are eyeing for their startups, food, beverages, and online retail dominate, making up a whopping 80%.
I hit up this year's franchise expo with friends to kill some time and do a bit of market research. We spotted plenty of cool products there, including some well-known brands like the quality breakfast joint Laya Burgers and the popular handcrafted beverage shop TrueDan. There was even a live demo of the recently talked-about YiguoRamen24H unmanned ramen shop featured in the news. Unmanned ramen shops have been popping up more and more lately, offering a wide range of instant noodles from Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Malaysia, along with optional hot pot ingredients, free salad bars, and drink stations. They're pretty popular among young folks who love trying new things. You might not know, but labor costs make up about half of the total expenses when opening a store. So, unmanned stores are a clear trend because they can save on labor costs, making them a top choice for many entrepreneurs. But while you cut down on labor costs, you end up increasing maintenance costs, which is something entrepreneurs need to do their homework on.
There were tons of booths at the expo specializing in handcrafted beverages, and they seemed to have larger setups. Word on the street is that handcrafted beverage shops have high profits and low technical barriers, making them easy to get into and even profitable. That's why many young people choose to start with a handcrafted beverage shop for their first business. Even many celebrities and stars have opened handcrafted beverage shops. For example, actor Chen Ling Jiu founded the Nine_tea brand, which incorporated characters from the game Werewolf. They had flavors like Witch Milk Tea or Youth Knight, with Witch Milk Tea coming in both poison and antidote flavors, perfectly in line with the Werewolf game. However, they announced closure eight months later. A friend mentioned when we were casually chatting about franchising beverage shops that if you can't break even in the first two years, you're basically preparing to lose money in the end. It's not that it can't be done, but it's really tough to sustain in the long run. Looks like the waters of entrepreneurship run pretty deep, huh?
