It is an unfortunate fact that not all relationships work out well. So many songs are about being in love but there must be almost as many songs about breaking up with a partner.
This song 'I'm Still Standing' is about the strength you have to find after a breakup in order to go on with your life. It was a huge hit in 1983 so I remember it very clearly from my teenage years. I liked it back then because it was kind of rebellious in tone. It's one of the songs I have taught my choir because it's positive and all about being strong when things have gone wrong.
The songwriting partnership of Elton John and Bernie Taupin goes all the way back to 1967. They met after both answering the same newspaper advert asking for songwriters and singers. Neither of them got the job which is probably quite fortunate, otherwise they may never have formed their incredible songwriting partnership which has lasted for well over five decades. It seems they have a working relationship that most could never dream of. They claim to never have had an argument in all that time.
It seems Elton is now finishing up his career. He played at The Glastonbury Festival a couple of weeks ago and claimed it would be his last live concert in England UK. Personally I think he will probably rock til he drops...Once a showman, always a showman.
For this song, I had to play the piano and sing separately, as it's a bit tricky to do both together and get a good result. Maybe with a bit more practice I'll get there.
And here is the original...I was 16 when this was in the charts...how come it only feels like about five minutes ago.
