For the very first time, I was able to grow, harvest, and eat some onions from my garden. This makes me believe the lots of possibilities around us if we can dare to dive into them. I have tried growing a lot of different crops contrary to the normal cereals and tubers we eat.
I have grown different species of veggies and even planted these onions, hoping to try growing other spices like ginger and probably garlic. The bulk of the onions eaten in this town are grown by people from the villages far away. I didn't know that it was possible to grow onions in any other place until I tried.
It took about 12 days for my onions to germinate, and I equally learned that the germination process is determined by various factors and how possible it is to do a viable seed treatment.
Due to the multitude of other farm works taking my time, I haven't been able to take care of my garden veggies and the onions, and having harvested my spring onions, I didn't know what became of the bulbs.
I have wanted to harvest the leafy spring part of the onions to see if they can regrow back and if the bulbs underneath will also grow as big as possible, but that didn't happen. After eating up my spring onions, 🧅 I can't find any bulbs here.
I needed some spring onions yesterday and decided to get some from a neighbor who has grown a bulk of them by the river bank. I was impressed to see this many onions and how well they were flourishing.
I noticed how these produced so well, much better than the ones I have grown at home. It was then I learned about some of the essential things I needed to do for my onions to grow well.
Here the soil is a very fertile loamy soil. Besides, she had equally kept a bag of animal dung, which she applied enough of it to the ground before planting. The variety of onions she planted is quite different from the ones I had bought and planted. And the watering of the ground here is very consistent so that the soil can be soft enough for the onions to grow deep into the soil.
I will really feel satisfied if I can grow this many onions close to the house such that I can have them within reach just like my other veggies. Most importantly, I can hardly wait for the rigorous farm work and harvest to come to a conclusion so that I can't tend to my garden properly.
For a start I have learnt how to grow onions and I feel so delightful about that.
