This is one big soursop. There is the sweet as well as the sour variant.
SO WHY EAT THE SOURSOP ?
In Malaysia, it is believed to help to clear our blocked airways if it is full of phlegm and mucus killing off any pathogens. It is also anti inflammatory. Reduces any swelling as well as I've heard that it prevents cancer.
The market - I usually get the Soursop at the wet market or sometimes, it is sold at the supermarket but rarely available. In Malaysia , the soursop is called the "DURIAN BELANDA". It is quite succulent. Do read on to find out what the inside of the soursop looks like.
There are also bananas, papayas, dragon fruits and pineapples. Fruits have lots of good nutrition as well as vitamins. Health boosters. The different colours.
How does it grow here in Sarawak?
This is what a soursop tree looks like. It grows to maturity and then drops to the ground just like what a Durian would but without the danger of getting pierced with the sharp thorns.
Can you spot the soursops? There are many of them on this tree.
Ah.. there is one here. This one still has a long way to go before it grows to maturity.
The soursop tree can grow quite big so there is a need of enough space.
This is what a baby soursop looks like before it grows into what I have in the earlier pictures. However, one tree takes a long time to grow to a tree and bear fruits. Usually five years. Does this fruit look cute? The thorn of the soursop isn't sharp at all.
Cut open one and inside. This is what it looks like inside.
Quite juicy. If it isn't ripe yet, then it would be slightly hard but if it gets ripe, the flesh inside is soft and quite chewy. Has the texture of a mango but different taste. Some are slightly sour and rarely sweet. Have you seen the soursop before? Would you want to try one?
