Autumn is a special season in the woods
It's when we get to see that bright display of colors, especially when the sun and the blue sky play along. The ground is being covered in yellows, oranges (no, not those oranges!) and reds and the trees shed their silhouettes to give rise to winter landscapes.
A bog might be discovered in the undergrowth where many different animals live: Frogs that now prepare for a time when the water may freeze, some dragonflies buzzing around enjoying the last days of warmth, as well as the hundreds or even thousands of different insects and aquatic animals living within it.
And then, just like that: mushrooms! They seem to thrive in the wet climate and can be found on tree stumps or the nutritious forest earth. There are many hundreds of different species and I personally dare not try them as some are lethal. Anyone know what kind this is?
Moss also covers many different areas and seem to prefer trees, growing predominantly on the north-western side where there is less sunlight and more dampness. Just like with fungi, there are many different kinds of mosses which can be very soft to the tough. I wonder if this was used as a sort of covering to sleep more comfortable in the past?
Mighty beech trees stand in all their glory having several different layers of branches with various colors as it also transitions to its winter slumber.
The forest is an amazing place to connect with nature again and feel at peace. This is especially helpful in today's time when we get over flooded with information and reactions.
Thanks mother nature for keeping us sane in these disturbing times!
