Fin.

ENGLISH

It all seems so far away, part of another life or dream, and yet the herd's herd's troop thundering off into the west still reverberates in my eardrums. I still feel the dust that stuck to my skin and clouded my eyes. And the thirst. A thirst bigger than the savannah, so intense that you can't think of anything else but quenching it somehow.

_ Professor, it's time to go back to camp. The guide found traces of lions and it is not safe to wander around.

The man, now in his middle age, takes the hint, lowers his binoculars and secures his rifle on his shoulder, turning to his assistant he replies.

_ All right, John, let's go back. Tomorrow will be another day. At the same time he secures the worn hat on his head with his free hand.

Sir Ian Relish is that man, Professor of Zoology at Cambridge for 20 years, has spent the last five years tracking down a creature as magnificent as it is elusive that the tribes of the heart of Africa have been calling the "koningin olifant" or Queen Elephant for a century.

Together with his assistant Jhon Spenser, they have investigated every legend, every rumor and every alleged sighting without much success. Only a deep intuition based on recurring visions of Relish keeps them tethered to their relentless search.

The natives have told Relish that the prolonged drought has caused the migration of the herds to intensify and some scouts claim to have seen approaching from the east a clearly distinct specimen of the rest always in the middle of a herd whose number is three times the average size.

That night in the warmth of the campfire Relish's thoughts also crackle, Jhon, who knows him well, knows that there is no room for talk when the green of the professor's eyes goes far away to other places of thought; Jhon covers his face with his hat and gets ready to sleep. Dimly dance the lights of the fire in the absorbed pupil of the professor; suddenly, lucid sensations of uneasiness, heat and tiredness are agglutinated and reflected in the clumsy gait of his feet that make him stumble with other members of the herd. And thirst. The thirst is unbearable. Relish wakes up startled and the first thing he reaches for is his canteen. He drinks avidly, as if the water would not only quench his thirst but also his anxiety.

Morning comes to the savannah, the earth seems to breathe deeply and gather strength to face the herd approaching from the east. Relish, who has not slept anymore, is crouched in some bushes near the camp. He watches the advance of the elephants with his binoculars, certainly the number far exceeds an average herd, they advance heavily, at a much slower pace than usual until they come to a complete stop a few kilometers away from the camp.

_ Professor, this is not at all common, says Jhon who had caught up with Relish in the bushes.

_ It's definitely not common, Jhon, something is stopping them, replies the man without stopping looking through the viewfinder. We must get closer, we must investigate.

The spectacle that both men witnessed as they approached is still told by the elders of the tribes on moonless nights, they relate it in the initiation rituals to the younger ones as a testimony of the strength of the spirit.

With each step that brought them closer to the herd, the elephants made way for them; first the young males, the strongest; then the young females and their small calves and finally the oldest females, the wisest and most wise of the herd. In the center she lay, lying on her side, breathing heavily, "koningin olifant", the queen elephant. She was dying of age and thirst. The same thirst that Relish had been suffering from for five years. Their spirits were joined like sides of the same coin. The old professor approached, drew some water and gave the queen a drink. She drank avidly, and that water not only quenched her thirst, but also mitigated the feeling of anxiety in both spirits. Relish watched the queen's green eyes slowly close and understood what her true quest was.

From that day on, the old Professor did not rest until that strip of territory of a few thousand kilometers was declared a nature reserve for wildlife.

The End.

This was so well written. It felt as though you were recounting some true-to-life biographical piece on an environmentalist and his encounters with the beautiful African Elephant, and more specifically with the Matriarch of the herd. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Aah, that unquenchable thirst for life, family, freedom, and safety; a love for the African wilderness... the open savannah... You never lose that pull of the land once you have known it.... I know... I was born and raised in Africa. To live to see one's family given the ability and support to thrive and survive against the odds. And for the grand matriarch to bring her family to meet him, as if being led in spirit to the one person who could truly make a difference. I found your post in Dreemport !LUV !ALIVE !PIMP

I really appreciate your comment, im glad my view of your Loved Africa have been respectful. My writing it is just a travel for the imagination... I would love pull a step on that amazing land.

Aah it was beautifully written... and I am sure you would love the open Savannah too... the wild open plains are vast, expansive... I am from South Africa so have only experienced it on a smaller scale within the National Parks and Game Reserves which are pretty huge anyway... but I would love to experience the open plains in Kenya or Botswana one day too. I reckon witnessing one of the massive migrations there would be epic. !PIZZA

Who would say you are from there!!! Sure i would loved the savannah, the strength of the landscape and its intriguing fauna.

Suerte y saludos, @joalheal.
