Ambos extrañaban a Carmen.

IN THE FOREST OF AGONY

The fog coming down from the mountain had covered the whole corral. It was so thick that Mateo Peláez could barely distinguish it from his own breath. In spite of this, he walked without a problem to the small wooden house he had built for Scythe, his old Australian shepherd. The night before, the animal had not slept in his house as usual. He peeked his head inside and the animal was not there. Then, anguish emerged from the deep ocean of his soul. The last memory of his deceased wife was gone. After securing the door with a rusty padlock, he left the hut and went into the cold bowels of the fog in search of his best friend.

“Scythe!” he shouted again and again.

A swirl of terrifying images plagued Matthew's mind. He could not lose the one who genuinely felt his loss. No false tears, no empty condolences, only sadness and grief. They both missed Carmen.

As hope agonized within him, he heard Scythe's barking. He ran towards the direction from where they came, as he advanced, he noticed that the fog was slowly dissipating. Suddenly, he was astonished to find himself at the foot of the mountain. He was sure he had not come such a long way. Perhaps the fear he felt prevented him from realizing how far he had walked. The dog's persistent barking came from deep in the forest, a green sea of pine trees that covered the entire mountain. Mateo made his way through the foliage. Threads of light pierced the leafy branches of the trees.

Oblivion had not wiped that dismal morning from his memory. Carmen, his wife, was exhausted. The cancer had won a ten-year war. The farewell was as long as it was painful. He talked with her until the final moment. Seeing the relief on her face, he was finally able to sob.

Mateo walked until fatigue almost demolished his will. Then, he thought it was useless to continue. He had not heard Scythe's barking again. However, he would find him, even if he had to crawl through the undergrowth. Suddenly, he remembered the cuddles in a ridiculous voice that Carmen would say to Scythe as she petted him.

“Carmen” he whimpered.

He gathered what little strength he had left and urged his weary spirit after Scythe's trail. Soon, he came to a cave, at the entrance of which were the bones of various animals. The scent of blood rushed him into the bowels of the mountain. With each step he took, a terror he had never experienced before was shaking his marrow. He staggered several times before he finally crashed to the ground. He tried to get up, but he couldn't. His right foot was trapped inside something. He shrugged his left arm, so he could rest his torso on the rough surface to roll over onto his back. Hastily, he sat up, pulled out the lighter he had in his back pants pocket and lit it. The flickering flame revealed what was holding him back.

“Scythe?” he stammered.

The decapitated head of the dog lay impaled on his foot, eyes and tongue missing, its fur soaked in coagulated blood. Mateo Pelaez reached out his trembling arms and picked up Scythe. He took him into his lap. He slid his fingers along the contours of the empty sockets and let out a desolate cry. The echo only made the wail louder. An even louder roar disturbed her moment of mourning. He raised his head. A hideous creature awaited him. It was an amalgam of animal carcasses. He tossed the Scythe's remains aside and scrambled to his feet. Filled with rage and beside himself, he lunged at the monster. The aberrant creature grabbed him by the arms and pulled them with such force that he ended up dismembering them. Blood spilled out as an unconscious Mateo Pelaez fell abruptly to the ground.

The creature bent over his victim, with a forceful blow pierced his sternum and extracted the still beating heart. He thrust the organ into his rotting chest and a deep sadness came over him. He turned his gaze towards Scythe's head and gazed at it for a long time before losing himself in the shadows of the cave, while he remembered the face of a woman named Carmen and an old dog named Scythe.
