It took an eternity for this coin to become available! It was only released to dealers this January for the general public to purchase. I had to preorder it last year.
I finally got my hands on it a few days ago— what a relief! These coins are incredibly tough to get hold of when they're first released!
2024 Tuvalu Silver Black Flag: The Kingston
It is the Kingston.
No, not Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, and the home to the Bob Marley Museum and the famous Port Royal (but related). Nor is it Kingston, Ontario, Canada, that houses the prestigious Queen's University and the Royal Military College. It is not Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom, a suburban area of Greater London with a rich history and many cultural attractions; or is it Kingston, New York, USA- a city known for its historic architecture and vibrant arts scene that played a significant role during the American Revolution.
But Kingston, a merchant ship!
Coin Highlights:
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine silver.
- Limited mintage of only 15,000 coins worldwide.
- Packaged in a protective plastic capsule.
- Obverse: Showcases the Jody Clark effigy of Charles III, the monetary denomination, the coin’s weight and fineness, and the 2024 year-date.
- Reverse: A representation of the Kingston, a merchant ship carrying valuable cargo, which was captured by John "Calico Jack" Rackham and crew. Calico Jack was known for having female pirates in his crew, including his lover, Anne Bonny. The pair sailed and pillaged their way through the Caribbean. The Kingston is shown ominously creeping towards the tropical coastline as the Jolly Roger flag ripples in the wind overhead. The motif of a skull is formed in the horizon. The design also features the words "THE KINGSTON," "BLACK FLAG: CALICO JACK & ANNE BONNY," the weight, fineness, and The ---Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark.
- Sovereign coin backed by Tuvalu government.

John Rackham—better known as Calico Jack— was an English pirate captain hanging around the Bahamas and Cuba in the early 1700s. He got his nickname from the calico clothes he loved to wear, and 'Jack' is just short for 'John'. He's famous for having two fearless female crew members: Mary Read and Anne Bonny, who was also his lover.
After becoming captain, Rackham focused on raiding small vessels close to shore. He and his crew captured the Kingston, a small Jamaican ship, and made it their flagship. They achieved several victories in the West Indies, even capturing a couple of large ships off Bermuda.
