A Silver Peso From Beautiful Mexico

in #hive-1368192 days ago

Over the years I've traveled to Mexico many times. This was before the whole cartel issue that has plagued the nation over the last several years. Back in the early 2000's I remember going to dinner with friends in Nogales just for fun about once a month. I also used to go down to Cancun and Acapulco about once a year, and Mexico City is an amazing place with so much history and culture. I would recommend it to anyone as long as you are careful about where you go and use your brain! The cartels have made it more dangerous.

While I was living in the southwestern United States, I got into the habit of collecting Mexican coins, particular the silver and gold variety. They have produced beautiful coins over the years, and Mexico City Mint (Casa de Moneda de México) is the oldest mint in the Americas founded in 1535. Ironically, they built it on top of Moctezuma's building used for meditation. One way the Spanish were making it clear they were now in charge. It since has moved to larger facilities as the population grew. Today they also produce the silver and gold bullion Libertad (Liberty) rounds that are a great way to invest in precious metals.

One coin I have bought up over the years is the Un Peso (One Peso) that was produced from 1920 unit the mid 1940's. It's a beautiful coin and they are still relatively inexpensive, unless you come across a nice mint state coin. This is a coin I picked up a few years back in a jewelry shop in Long Beach, California along with several other Mexican coins.

From numista.com

This coin is in pretty good condition, but definitely not mint state. From a collector's standpoint, it's probably worth around $18. These aren't uncommon as in 1944 they minted 39,522,000. As far as silver content goes on this one it's 72% silver. So of the 16.6 grams, 11.95 grams are silver, and as of the moment the price of silver per gram is $1.02. That gives about $12.19 worth of silver in this beauty!

I've always been a fan of Mexican silver and I like to buy it when the price is right. This one the price was definitely right so I added it to the stack along with a few others that day.

In a lot of my posts I like to dive in and share more about a country or it's history. Mexican history is incredibly complicated, if you don't believe me try reading up on it in Wikipedia. I will leave you with a fun fact, Cinco De May (May 5th) is a huge holiday in Mexico and even celebrated in parts of the US. The holiday celebrates Mexican Independence not from Spain, but from France. Look it up!

That will just about do it for today, and I hope you enjoyed seeing this beautiful coin. Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below, and thank you so much for all of your support. I really do deeply appreciate it! Have a great day everyone!

I always like the Un Peso!😊
As a kid you could pick these up very reasonably priced. That was before Mexican silver became so popular!😇👍

It's hard to find any Mexican silver cheap anymore, it used to be pretty much sold at spot.

At our local Coin shop, silver used to be $.25 over a spot. Now, if you can find something five to $10 over spot you found a bargain😇

The good old days when silver was cheap... For awhile I had a place I could buy silver and gold at spot, he bought at fifteen percent under and sold at spot. What didn't sell got sipped off the be melted down. He retired though, it was a nice while it lasted!

I guess it's back to the thrift store looking for bargains...Lol
Our neighbor just found a sterling candy dish at our local Goodwill, probably 2 to 3 ounces...she paid $1.95
Not sure how that slipped through the cracks Lol!!😇

Great story about your trips to Mexico. That One Peso coin you found in Long Beach is a real gem, buddy. It's impressive how the history and value of these pieces endure over time.

Mexican silver is in demand now, it used to be cheap. I'm sure Venezuelan silver is the best deal there for you, it's a lot harder to find these days since Chavez changed everything in Venezuela It used to be such a pretty country to visit, but now I can't safely travel there, and haven't been able to since Chavez came to power.

My wife and I were supposed to go to Mexico a few years ago, but we ended up not for several reasons. The safety aspect was definitely one of them. Our friends ended up going on their own and they had a great time in Cabo. I kind of wish we had been able to go now, but I still think we made the best decision for us at the time. I hope maybe I get the chance to visit down there one day.

It's a beautiful place, it's a shame the cartels have made it so dangerous. I remember at one point Juarez, Mexico was considered the most dangerous place of the planet, sitting right across the border from El Paso, Texas. Always think safety first, it will keep you alive a lot longer!

It would be nice if they at least had some kind of code of honor or something like that. I remember a guy telling me once that Vegas was so much better when the mob ran it. Yes, they were ruthless, but things were cleaner and they just treated people better as long as you didn't cross them.

Americans won't be safe anywhere but America for a while..

I agree with you on than one!

Well, I'm always right. It's easy to agree with me..

They also have the eagle in their coin similar to the US 😀

The Golden Eagle sitting on a prickly pear cactus with a rattlesnake in it's mouth. That's been on their coinage for more than a hundred years!

Mexican silver! Very uncommon here. I like it.

Here it's not uncommon, Orange county is still pretty close to Mexico so there is a lot of Mexican silver around for relatively good price. Not as good as they used to be, I used to be able to buy Libertad rounds in southern Arizona for pretty much spot price! The good old days!

lovely coin my friend, love the eagel eating the snake.
and it is quite an old coin as well.

I don't know, but was there a time places in southern America, like Mexico was free from the cabal, drugs and corruption?

Corruption is common in Central and South America sadly. Colombia for years was the victim of cartels, but not so much anymore. Most cocaine growers went to Peru or other places that didn't oppose them. Probably the most stable South American nation is Chile, but even they have issues from time to time. Mexico used to be a great place, before the cartels took over. Much of the country is now controlled by the cartels, not the government. It's really sad, it a beautiful place with so many nice people!

Really sad the actual situation with Cartels in my Mexico. My last visit was on 2017. Missing tacos but not violence news!

It really is sad, I used to love going down to Mexico for day or even a week. It's such a beautiful place with such kind people. I'm fortunate to live close enough to the border that I can get great, authentic Mexican food locally. I do miss the really spicy food I could get in El Paso, Juarez used to be such a nice place to visit. It really is so sad! It must be really hard for you as it is your home and now it's not safe to visit.

My dealer in Central Europe also offers Mexican silver. But the dealer has such a high markup over the price of silver that I haven't bought any yet.
!HUG

It will be expensive there, a lot of it is cheap here because people have carried it over the border and it never got hit with taxes. That's what's nice about the desert southwest along the Mexican border, great place to buy Mexican silver!

How interesting to have a silver coin now, when in my country, you haven't seen coins on the street for years. This one from Mexico is spectacular!

Venezuela used to have many beautiful silver coins, I have a few stored away somewhere. I think I bought them when I was in Caracas many years back now! Thank you, these old Mexican coins are beautiful and I love collecting them, the silver is always going to have value!

A coin over a hundred years old, wow that's amazing.
A very nice collector's item.

I am curious about the design: Where it says “PESO” there is a shiny beanie that says “Libertad”.
