Over the years I've traveled to Mexico many times. This was before the whole cartel issue that has plagued the nation over the last several years. Back in the early 2000's I remember going to dinner with friends in Nogales just for fun about once a month. I also used to go down to Cancun and Acapulco about once a year, and Mexico City is an amazing place with so much history and culture. I would recommend it to anyone as long as you are careful about where you go and use your brain! The cartels have made it more dangerous.
While I was living in the southwestern United States, I got into the habit of collecting Mexican coins, particular the silver and gold variety. They have produced beautiful coins over the years, and Mexico City Mint (Casa de Moneda de México) is the oldest mint in the Americas founded in 1535. Ironically, they built it on top of Moctezuma's building used for meditation. One way the Spanish were making it clear they were now in charge. It since has moved to larger facilities as the population grew. Today they also produce the silver and gold bullion Libertad (Liberty) rounds that are a great way to invest in precious metals.
One coin I have bought up over the years is the Un Peso (One Peso) that was produced from 1920 unit the mid 1940's. It's a beautiful coin and they are still relatively inexpensive, unless you come across a nice mint state coin. This is a coin I picked up a few years back in a jewelry shop in Long Beach, California along with several other Mexican coins.

This coin is in pretty good condition, but definitely not mint state. From a collector's standpoint, it's probably worth around $18. These aren't uncommon as in 1944 they minted 39,522,000. As far as silver content goes on this one it's 72% silver. So of the 16.6 grams, 11.95 grams are silver, and as of the moment the price of silver per gram is $1.02. That gives about $12.19 worth of silver in this beauty!
I've always been a fan of Mexican silver and I like to buy it when the price is right. This one the price was definitely right so I added it to the stack along with a few others that day.
In a lot of my posts I like to dive in and share more about a country or it's history. Mexican history is incredibly complicated, if you don't believe me try reading up on it in Wikipedia. I will leave you with a fun fact, Cinco De May (May 5th) is a huge holiday in Mexico and even celebrated in parts of the US. The holiday celebrates Mexican Independence not from Spain, but from France. Look it up!
That will just about do it for today, and I hope you enjoyed seeing this beautiful coin. Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below, and thank you so much for all of your support. I really do deeply appreciate it! Have a great day everyone!
