Promoting reading is an activity that always requires new and attractive ideas to make a real impact on people. And gathering a group of people in public places to sit and read in front of all the people passing by seemed like a phenomenal thing.
So that's what we did this Saturday. The idea was to simply arrive and start reading in the low seats of the area known as "18 floors" in Santiago de Cuba. As there are several bus and truck stops here, it was the ideal place, as there are thousands of people who pass through this street daily.
We didn't even have to interact. Just arrive, sit down, and start reading for about an hour. It may seem like a simple thing, but walking down the street and finding a line of people reading instead of using their cell phone is something unusual. We will continue doing just this until we gather many more people and show that people still read in our city.
In the end we got together and took a couple of photos. Unfortunately there are no photos of when we were all reading, because we were concentrating on our readings, but I hope that the time will come when passers-by will take photos because of the visual impact we have generated.

Así que eso hicimos este sábado. La idea era simplemente llegar y ponerse a leer en los asientos bajos de la zona conocida como "18 plantas" en Santiago de Cuba. Como aquí hay varias paradas de autobuses y camiones fue el lugar ideal, pues son miles las personas que transitan esta calle a diario.
Ni siquiera teníamos que interactuar. Simplemente llegar, sentarnos, y comenzar a leer alrededor de una hora. Puede parecer algo sencillo, pero ir caminando por la calle y encontrar una fila de personas leyendo en vez de estar usando su celular es algo insólito. Justo esto seguiremos haciendo hasta reunir a muchísimas más personas y demostrar que en nuestra ciudad aún se lee.
Al final nos reunimos e hicimos un par de fotos. Lamentablemente no hay fotos de cuando todos estábamos leyendo, porque estábamos concentrados en nuestras lecturas, pero espero que llegue el momento en que sean los transeúntes quienes tomen fotos por el impacto visual que hayamos generado.
