Micro Balcony Garden Journal 2024 - Sep 18 /

Last week, I was in Croatia for the annual Hive meetup, Hive Fest / @hivefest. While Germany had been experiencing cool days below 20°C, I enjoyed an extended summer in warm Croatia. However, upon returning home, a quick glance at the balcony reminded me that autumn is approaching.

Since it had been rainy and cool, I didn’t need to ask my family to water the plants while I was away. After returning, the first thing I did was water the pots that hadn’t gotten rain. While the excitement of Hive Fest was wonderful, it’s also nice to enjoy a cup of coffee on the balcony again.

The chili peppers, which had a strong start, slowed down a bit, but now seem to be picking up again. Both the tiny bonsai chili and the fun name "Lila Luzi", which fruits change color from purple to yellow, orange, and red, are doing well. However, the world's most expensive chili, Aji Charapita, has remained small, but I’m considering overwintering a couple of them.

The climbing beans I’m saving for seeds are drying nicely. I’m already daydreaming about planting them here and there in a bit of guerrilla gardening next year—it would be fun if we see and harvest beans all over town 😁

Speaking of saving seeds, I’ve started collecting morning glory seeds. While it’s not originally a Japanese flower, I grew up with it, and it’s often included in Japanese seed mixes, I’m thinking of gifting these seeds to customers at the market around the end of the year.

I’ve also collected seeds from a fig I ate in Croatia. During Hive Fest, @livinguktaiwan brought figs from her Airbnb host, and it was by far the best fresh fig I’ve ever eaten in my life.

I wanted my family to taste it, and as a gardener, I also wanted to grow it myself as most of the figs in Germany has purple skin. Thanks to Livinguktaiwan, I got to know the name of the variety. It’s called Petrovača.

In Croatia, fig trees were growing everywhere, full of fruit.

There were plenty of fresh and dried figs being sold at the market. Using Google Translate, I chatted with one of the sellers, who told me the green figs are considered more expensive. The purple figs are more common, even in Germany, but while the green ones don’t look as fancy, they’re absolutely delicious.

I was so excited about these figs that Livinguktaiwan kindly brought four of them to the closing party as a gift! It's Hive kindness 🐝 I wanted to bring them home, so I carefully packed them in my suitcase. Unfortunately, due to flight delays, my suitcase arrived two days later, and the figs had become too soft to eat 😢

While waiting for my flight, I researched how to grow fig trees and learned that they can be grown from seed as well as from cuttings. So, I saved the seeds and will try growing them myself. I washed the seeds and now drying them.

Since fig trees can bear fruit outdoors even in Germany, I’m optimistic that as long as the seeds germinate, they’ll grow. Then I will have plenty of fruits ... 🤤

Without the flight delay, my family could have enjoyed the fresh figs, but then I wouldn’t have learned that I could grow figs from seeds. Now, I’m looking forward to harvesting my own figs in two or three years.

This week, I’ll work on clearing out the summer vegetables and sow autumn greens. I also need to buy spring bulbs. The daylight hours are getting shorter and shorter—I need to hurry up 🏃‍♀️

Happy gardening, everyone!

I love figs, and it's supercool you got to bring some home from seeds - I will look forward to hearing how they do! Loved this post.

Thanks riverflow! I wish plenty sprouts and have some fruits in the next 2-3 years. I read dogs are quite quick until they produce fruits. I’ve never made it though 😅 I try my best 💪

I think you mean figs, he he he. I tried figs once but it was too hot and no one watered them and they died. Then I had another one that was huge and took over but didn't fruit! Grrr.

I really hope you can grow some fig trees from the seeds. Let me know in future, I'll love to know!

I had a strange idea at a supermarket today; becoming a pioneer of Croatian fig in Sachsen (state I live in Germany) 😂 I’ll try my best!

Thank you so much, you are so kind @livinguktaiwan!
