December is here! It's been cold in Germany, but ā¦ but but but there are still strawberries on my balcony šš® After being surprised by strawberries in October and November, I find myself amazed yet again this month. At this rate, I wouldnāt be surprised if there are still strawberries next month.
If spring-bearing strawberries start producing fruit around May, that means theyāre fruiting for about eight months of the year! Even just one or two strawberries can brighten up a dish or dessert. Next year, Iām planning to propagate this late-blooming strawberry plantāitās been such a joy.
Although temperatures sometimes drop below freezing in the mornings and evenings, the yuzu tree that arrived last week seems completely unbothered and is thriving. Meanwhile, our kumquat and lemon trees also members of the citrus family are staying cozy indoors. For those with limited indoor space, itās important to choose hardy, frost-tolerant plants for perennials.
In other news, a small change has appearedāa pair of leaves sprouting from what I believe is a fig tree! If this turns out to be from the delicious green figs I brought back from Hive Fest in Croatia, I canāt stop dreaming of having unlimited fresh figs at home.
Also in the kitchen, the hyacinth bulb Iāve been nurturing has finally started to sprout. I bought the bulbs in mid-October and began growing one. While the roots developed well, I was eagerly waiting for the shoots to emerge. Iām so happy to see them now. I chose a mixed pack of white, purple, and pink bulbsāwhat color flowers will bloom, I wonder.
Speaking of winter flowers, my Christmas cactus has been forming buds. It doesnāt have as many buds this year, likely because the pot is too tight. I plan to repot it and take some cuttings by spring.
I started writing my garden journal in February this year, and Iām hoping to keep it going strong through December without running out of topics. In January, Iāll start planning seeds and testing germination, so the challenge is to make it until then.
Either way, plants bring me so much energy and joy, especially when Iām feeling down. Iām deeply grateful to them and sometimes wonder if they called me to this gardening-loving country of Germany.
Wishing everyone a lovely Sunday. Happy Gardening š±
