A few weeks go I took a photo of this Christmas lunch buffet that was being offered at a restaurant we had visited whilst doing the Portugal visa application. I don't know why ,but I had an inkling this year things would be tight and we will be working up to the evening of the 24th. Business is hectic a the best of times and now with the Christmas rush there is no spare time anymore.
This year is so bad I expect we will be back at work on the 26th literally having one day off. There are no breaks and I suppose we kind of signed up for this when we started this business. My kids have been broken in already
and they realise what it takes to keep a business running and that does give me a fuzzy warm feeling. I was not sure if they would be able to cope and they have stepped up and raised their game.
The hope is next Christmas we will be more organised and structured being slightly more prepared for this very busy period. There is not much you can do first time around as this has been a learning period that tests your mettle and then some. The staff refer to everyone as soldiers which is quite funny as no one ever stops until the work is completed. Working a warehouse supplying online is not for the feint hearted and wish we could afford more staff and not be down to the bare bones which we operate on.
We normally cook on the 24th and have a full Christmas diner which includes a Turkey, a leg of lamb plus a home cooked ham long with tons of various salads and vegetables. We prefer to do this in the evening the day before because it is normally cooler plus it frees up Christmas day to relax.
I did mention this buffet to the family at the time and it was immediately rejected as a bad idea and today was asked to make the bookings. The only thing was would they be fully booked already and when I phoned it turned out they had a cancellation this morning and that they could squeeze us in.
I would not normally agree to tis type of luncheon, but the food we had was very good and expect the same from the Christmas lunch. The price is ok I guess as the staff need to be paid for working Christmas day and you are also paying for convenience in our particular case. R360 is roughly $20 and I am sure most of you are saying wow that is a bargain and I guess it is even for South Africa. Both my grandkids eat for free and they have a special children play area which will make life a little easier.
