POBphotocontest New Round: FRUIT ~ after 6 years we've got apples

in #hive-15032920 days ago

With fruit being the topic for this week's #POBPhotocontest run by @friendlymoose I've got some apples to show you.

This year, the Dwarf Apple tree that was planted in May of 2018 is finally loaded with five different varieties of apples. The secret to getting five types of apples from the same tree is the tree has been grafted using the branches of five different varieties of apples. In the past, the apple tree has flowered but has never set any fruit. Year after year the flowers would drop to the ground and once again we'd be disappointed, wondering what the heck was happening.

Between the two Dwarf Apple trees that are planted by our vegetable garden, there have to be over a hundred apples hanging from the branches.

@farm-mom is already talking about Homemade Apple Pie.

Putting a date and time stamp on the pictures I take helps me keep a log of exactly what has been going on at the farm.

Recently the camera has had a mind of its own, switching back and forth from putting the month first and the day second. Then for some unknown reason, the camera places the month second and day first as it has done in this picture of the apple blossoms. On May 5th, 2024 flowers littered the tree like never before. Six weeks later the apples in the previous pictures are already the size of golf balls.

Here is a picture of the tree when it was first planted, showing the five grafted branches. (RED MCINTOSH, SUMMER RED, YELLOW TRANSPARENT, YELLOW DELICIOUS, AND GRAVENSTEIN).

You grafted or it came as grafted ? Homemade Apple Pie is going to be delicious for sure, not to mention organic as well.

The trees came grafted. We purchased 2 of them at the time and they weren't cheap. @farm-mom makes a great Apple crumb pie.

I would have come to take some, if lived nearby.

Unfortunately, someone like my little brother doesn’t like Apple😅😅😅
He’s really missing😅

I know that the only way our grandchildren will eat an apple is if it is peeled, then they will gobble them up.

A great post and grafting definitely works. We lived on an apple farm when we first arrived down here, and we saw a wonderful grafting effort. One side of the trees in a small orchard were apples and the other sides were pears. The guy that did the grafting was an Italian POW, and after the war he stayed on in the country, married a South African woman and he bought a small farm here in the Cape.

We have none of the apple brand names that you mention, and I wonder if our Golden Delicious apple is not your Yellow Delicious brand. Apple pie is always a thing to look forward to :)

Blessings and cheers.

I thought that 5 different apples from the same tree were cool, but apples on one side and pears on the other side would be a strange sight to see.
I found this info, Golden Delicious Apple (a.k.a. Yellow Delicious Apple),
A big thanks for the tips, always appreciated, my friend.

I agree, and the apple valley where we stayed was filled with apple farms. We were surprised to see that no other farms had the apple/pear combination. But of course, they all concentrated on growing top quality apples for export. I know that the Golden Delicious Apple are also growing in abundance here, and glad that you guys also have them.

Have a lovely Sunday, and all of the best to you guys for the new week.

Greetings @thebigsweed ,

You two really have a winner there....sounds delicious already. ^__^

Of course Apple pie is on the menu.

Lovely, informative post.....enjoyed!

Cheers!

Being that this is the first year the trees have set any fruit, I check them everyday, thinking they may not be there and it was a mirage. 😁
