Chasing Mushrooms and Sunbeams Because Fall Isn’t All Pumpkin Spice and Doom

in #hive-1533494 days ago

I know I’ve been guilty of taking a few cheap shots at fall and winter. It’s like a seasonal roast battle, and yeah, I’ve dished out my fair share of shade about the cold, the soggy days, and the "oh great, another misty morning and cloudy afternoon" vibe. But let’s set the record straight, I don’t hate fall or winter. In fact, when the sun finally decides to show up like the rock star it is, I’m the first one grabbing my Canon R5 and hitting the forest trails.

Now, if you’re rolling your eyes thinking, “Oh great, here's another one waxing poetic about nature,” hold your mushrooms, my friend. This isn’t about hugging trees (though they’re nice, I guess). It’s about chasing light, finding beauty in decay, and yes, photographing mushrooms like a proud fungi paparazzo.

The Magic of Fall (When the Sun Cooperates)

Here’s the deal: Fall with sunlight is a whole vibe. The light? It’s golden and soft, like nature’s Instagram filter. The forest? A treasure chest of color, texture, and weird little surprises popping out of the ground. That’s when I load up my Canon R5 and my trusty EF100 f/2.8L Macro lens, the combo that makes every mushroom look like a celebrity on the red carpet.

And yes, mushrooms are the stars here. They’re quirky, fleeting, and kind of mysterious. One day, the forest floor looks like a crunchy pile of brown leaves. The next? Boom! Tiny umbrellas, wavy caps, and psychedelic colors are sprouting like they just got an invite to Coachella.

Mushrooms Are the Supermodels of the Forest

Just look at them! Some are tall and elegant, like they’re strutting the runway. Others are clumped together, like a mushroom family reunion. There are even the diva mushrooms, decked out in red and white, clearly screaming, “I’m toxic, don’t even think about it!” (Yes, I’m talking about you, Amanita muscaria. You’re fabulous, but I’m keeping my distance while coming in close with the macro!)

With the macro lens, every mushroom becomes a work of art. The textures, the patterns, the little nicks and tears, it’s like getting up close and personal with nature’s quirkiest architects. And the best part? Mushrooms don’t complain about their angles or ask you to edit out a double chin (you just can't imagine how often that happens!)

It’s Not Just About the Mushrooms

The real reason I love these little photography adventures is that they remind me to slow down. In a world where we’re all running around like caffeinated squirrels, pausing to crouch down in the dirt and photograph fungi is oddly therapeutic. It’s not just about capturing a cool shot (though, let’s be real, that’s part of it. Well, ok, big part!). It’s about the process, breathing in the crisp air, noticing the small details, and feeling like you’re part of something bigger, feeling at home out there.

And hey, bonus points for the cardio workout. Between crouching, kneeling, and balancing on slippery moss-covered logs, my legs get more of a burn than they do from some walking sessions. Functional fitness for the win!

A Reminder to Chase the Light

So yeah, fall and winter? Not so bad, if the sun comes out to play. And when it does, trust me, there’s nothing better than heading into the woods and losing yourself in a macro world of mushrooms and moss. You don’t have to be a professional photographer or have fancy gear to do it either. Just grab whatever camera you’ve got, get outside, and start looking for the tiny wonders hiding in plain sight.

Because you know what? Life is a lot like fall weather. It’s unpredictable, messy, and occasionally breathtaking. But when the light hits just right? Magic.

I love fungus and mushrooms, and they're a lot easier to photograph than birds! Magnificent mushroom shots, @borniet! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Thank you very much! Yup... the mushrooms and fungus don't tend to fly away that easily ;-)
But you do need to be early enough most often, because otherwise you will mostly find trampled ones.
