Monday Drumday: Learning a solo

I have been doing more messing around on the drums lately, but needed to find something to actually learn for today. There are tons of drum lessons on Youtube and I found this one from Jeff Randall. I do not think I have done one of his before. He has a Patreon page where subscribers get access to extra material, but I just took the drum tab from the video.

Jeff teaches us a brief solo that uses a call and response pattern with the first half being the same each time and the responses getting steadily more complex. I found it tricky as it is not a straight 4/4 beat and the bass wanders a bit. I was getting fairly close by my final take, but I am probably playing it at less than half his full speed. I can keep working on it. I had the usual recording issues where either sound does not work or gets out of sync. I can work with my Linux setup, but can be frustrating.I did not do any fancy editing this time.

We had a contribution to the Drums community from @iyedrumz who shows us how to really play as he backs up his band. I can dream of playing so naturally. I know it takes years of practice.

Rock on!

It takes years of practice indeed bit you are doing well so far. Thinking back to guitar you would never imagine that some of it would become second nature. It will be the same with the drums!

My thoughts exactly! I've been playing guitar for most of my life and it took years before I really felt I was grooving naturally. I need to keep at it with the drums to get close to that.

Yeah, I remember back in those teen days where just getting a finger to stay on the right string was incredibly hard!

Man, I need one of those.

It's a neat box. I picked it up second hand and it makes a good noise. I still need to program a custom kit I'm happier with.

I think that is what they call electric drum. Keep up the good work and practice. Enjoyed both videos!

Well it's an electronic drum kit. Real drums are too loud for many of us to play at home.

ok now do it 4 times as fast .....will be awesome!

Luckily music is not purely about speed, but I could improve on this. That was only about a half hour of messing around with it.

I am a trained percussionist..but those pedals on the drum kit...that is a hole new ball game....

Coordinating the feet is a challenge. I think that as with most instruments you can make it sort of automatic, but then you get thrown by unusual rhythms. I'm still at beginner level really.

I'm more of a RockBand video game drummer. Which I really do enjoy. I know it's not "real" music, but it is fun.

Do you want to win SOME BEER together with your friends and draw the BEERKING.

I've never played any of those music games. I expect the drumming aspect may be more like real playing as the guitar controllers just have a few buttons. So it could be good training for drumming. I just had a look to see if there's a game like that I could play with my drums. I found Performous. I may give it a try.

Cool, maybe some getting some proper tutorial would give you inspiration, i know i'm having a guitar lesson this week to work on a few things.

I have considered getting lessons. I will look into it.

Well done on the drumming..
It sure is challenging.. Not sure if I could be relied upon providing a steady beat myself.. So, great work.

Maybe I can get good enough to play with the band. For now it's just for fun. It's a nice brain exercise.

It sure is that!

Sounded pretty good to me. Where do you think the disconnect is with your machine. I doubt it is the operating system. Is it an older processor? Solid State Drive? Maybe it is time for a new machine? :)

It just seems that some things do not always work first time, but I have not worked out why. The PC is a few years old, but is fairly powerful with an SSD. Most other apps just work fine, but the one I use for these recordings, guvcview, can be erratic. I have not found a good alternative yet. When stuff is free you can't complain too much.

No, you definitely can't complain with free. Does Audacity do the kind of stuff you are looking for?

Audacity only does audio. I use it for that and Ardour for more complex recordings. I did try a few video apps a while back, but found issues with some of them. OBS Studio might do the trick if I can work it out.

Oh, okay, I understand now. I use OBS Studio for our school board meetings that I record and broadcast. It is very powerful, but it works well. Lot's of bells and whistles on that one!

I see people use it for video shows on Youtube. It's more than I need, but reliability is good.
