Seeing beyond the clothes: Skills Over Style

We often think about how we look when we go for a job interview. People say that looking nice can help us make a good impression. But is it fair to think that how someone looks is as important as the skills they bring to the job? Some say It is right to pay attention to someones appearance instead of just focusing on what they can do. Or is it? ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ *vsauce intensifies

Long ago people dressed up in their best clothes to go to job interviews because they wanted to look as professional as possible. It was like a rule that everyone followed. Even now in many places how we look still seems really important. In some jobs looking a certain way is a big part of the job.

But not all jobs are like that. Ie if someone is really good at writing stories or solving math problems does it matter what they wear? Some people think it shouldnt. So while some jobs might still care a lot about looks others are starting to say that its okay to be yourself and let your skills do the talking. And that sounds pretty fair to me!

Some people say that looking neat and professional for a job interview is important because it shows you care about the job. They think that if you dress up it means youre serious and respectful.

But theres another side to this. What if someone doesnt have fancy clothes or cant look a certain way? It doesnt seem fair to decide theyre not good for the job just because of how they look. Everyone is different and some people might feel really sad if theyre judged only by their appearance. Thats not very kind is it?

When it comes to getting a job what you can do should be way more important than how you look.

There are stories about companies that care more about your brain than your shoes. A tech company that had a puzzle on their website. The people who solved it got an interview regardless of what they looked like. And you know what! They found some of the smartest people that way!

Another time a hospital needed doctors. They didnt just look at their pictures they asked them really tough medical questions. The doctors who knew the most got hired. That makes sense doesnt it? Because when youre sick you want the doctor who knows the best medicine not the one with the nice look.

To make sure everyone gets a fair chance in job interviews we could try some new ideas. Heres what we could do -

Cracking
The Interview
Blind Interviews
Just like a blind taste test we wouldnt see the person at all. Instead we'd talk on the phone. That way we only focus on what they say not how they look.
Skill Tests
Give everyone a test that shows how well they can do the job. It doesnt matter what you wear just how many answers you get right.
Work Samples
Ask people to show something they've made. You bring your best project to share what you can do.

By trying these ideas we can make sure that the smartest and most talented people get the job no matter what they look like. And thats a really good way to change the system for the better! 😄

We talked about a lot of things in this blog. We learned that some jobs really care about looks but others are starting to care more about skills and brains. Its not very nice when people dont get a fair chance because of how they look. Thats called bias and its not fair. We also came up with some cool ideas to help everyone get a fair chance like blind interviews and skill tests.

So what do you think? Shouldnt we care more about what someone can do than how they look? What will you do to make sure everyone gets a fair chance? I also invite you to the conversation.
