The Blurred Lines of Online Privacy

in #hive-1538503 days ago

Scrolling through the web today, there is one line from a reel I can't seem to get outta my head, it gave me deep thoughts, the speaker seems to be a familiar face, a celebrity, probably an actress, but I can't seem to put a name to her face, according to her, we shouldn't let our quest for virality push us to the verge of tarnishing our brand or image as a person. We all know this is the current trend worldwide, ever since the discovery of internet money and instant fame.

This current generation should be more susceptible to that advice because unlike people born in the 90s and above who think twice before engaging in any action, the current Gen Z would rather act impulsely and think about regretting or not later, this has led to the early success of many of them and also the doom of others, with this evolvement in the internet age, it wouldn't come as a surprise if employees are now expected to submit their social media handles for scrutiny by their employers before given a job, though it is definitely an invasion of privacy, the truth remains, are we even private anymore, some people basically live their lives on the internet, some in the name of reality shows, others just to increase their followers and earning, and some just for the fun of it, as long as you have already sent a part of yourself for the pub;lic view, then there is no point of lamenting over your privacy, because without the company even asking for your permission, with details in your credentials, you can easily be searchout, it's even more advanced these days, you can be easily searched just with your image provided.

Building a brand or organization isn't an easy task, I'm currently in the baby stage of building my own fashion brand and can't imagine how I would feel if the hard work I've put in so far gets tarnished by my worker, so it is understandable if an organization wants to scrutinize that area of their workers before employment, imagine going online to see my Kindergarten's daughter teacher bio to be a porn actress online, how would that make e feel about the school, it's not about discrimination this time, I would definitely think the school to be incompetent, no matter how qualified she is, because children of nowadays even have access to the internet.

That being said, I have no problem with submitting my social media handles to an organization I plan to work with, so far I have a clean online record that doesn't tarnish my chances of gaining that employment. Just like I began this post, with the advice from that actress, if you have plans to work for someone and especially if you want to build a reputable brand for yourself, it is advisable that in the name of going viral, don't tarnish your reputation, yes it works for some people, but there is also a chance of not being among the lucky few, why not choose to go viral for a god cause instead.

Except when a staff has something to hide, I don't see it as something difficult for an organization to have their staffs social handle and to me I see it as way for my organization to trust me more knowing fully well I don't leave a fake life.

Exactly my point, I've got nothing be to hide, so they can go ahead.

A good understanding of social media management by the employee and a good understanding of privacy and organisation policy is good for any employee to strike and maintain a balanced social media life and job professionalism.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

finding balance is a good point. thanks for reading.
