The Benefits I Enjoy Currently in My Teaching Role

Looking through the question for this edition, I will say I am not currently working full time at my place of work but would in the future. I am a serving corper presently and in a few months, the service year will come to an end making me start hunting for a full-time job. But as the case may be, I will say some things that I enjoy at my place of work.

I started working fully as a teacher in January and it has been an amazing one which I have enjoyed so far but cannot be compared to my last workplace where I taught at a private school for 3 years with no issue, the boss being a nice and considerate person and one I have always prayed to encounter someone like her wherever I may work.

I teach in a public school and one of the benefits that I enjoy here is the freedom to leave whenever you want to without being stopped or asked why you are leaving at such an early hour. When I first stepped into this school to submit my posting letter, I was asked if I was the type that would be committed and devoted to the school and not practising on and off. I assured them to be of my best behaviour and to be committed. Of course, I stood to my promise to the school but it didn't stop me from leaving when I wanted to.

According to the school, once you arrive at the school early, write your name in the attendance register and perform your duty by teaching your class, then you are free to leave after then. The school closes by 2 pm from Monday to Friday and I only teach on Mondays to Wednesdays. But on these days, once I am done teaching the class and have completed my lesson notes, I can leave even before the normal closing time which sometimes, I leave around 12 to 1 pm with no one querying me.

Another benefit is the understanding management. The school doesn't deprive us when we take permission for not coming to school as long as you inform them before the day or send a message via WhatsApp or SMS of your absence from work and your reasons. They won't go ahead pokenosing once you give a good reason. Though I don't like taking an excuse unless there is a need to which I don't hesitate to give notice before the day to make them aware. This, I have done twice since I got to this school. Knowing that one can get permission and you won't be refused is a benefit that makes the school nice.

The last benefit is having your free time once you are done teaching. Public school is not like private school where you are used till the last drop is taken from you. In public/government schools, teachers are only assigned to a subject and in most cases, two and once you have done your work, you have got the rest of the day to yourself without being scared of the school management.

This made me remember the first teaching job I got, the woman didn't give me a breathing space. She enjoyed seeing me standing all day shouting and screaming my lungs out all in the name of controlling the little kids, all because of 12,000 naira 😂 It was like being used as a maid.

So far, I enjoy all these benefits at my place of work and once my service ends, I leave for a greener pasture 😀 because my one-year assignment being sent to such a town would end too.

Thanks for your time reading. Looking forward to your interaction.

Thank you 😊

Public school is not like private school where you are used till the last drop is taken from you.

Those private school proprietors will be on one's case like kilode. I once taught in one of those schools where 10% of my salary was deducted because I was about just two minutes late to school on four occasions in a month. I quit after enduring a term with them. Mi ò lè wá kú!

Hahaha. Yes oo. I cannot come and die 🤣
Those proprietors ehn, except for a few who are nice and considerate.

the freedom to leave early without being questioned is one of the best thing, good for you that management allows you absences with prior notice, and the ample free time once teaching duties are completed.

Yes. The management are understanding and considerate too.

Absconding from school.........our teacher. However, a lot of opportunities are there for public school teachers. They can even have a spare job or business to make them earn more.

Hahaha. I am not an absconder. Lol
I make sure to do my duty and I am free. Yes, that's another benefit too, they have the time for a second job to complement their government work.

Ahaha!!! I was just saying coz I witnessed it along our teachers back then too.

It's good to know that your work doesn't stress you that much compared to being a teacher at a private school.
No one likes stress
So it's indeed a great benefit for you.

No one likes stress o but when it comes, one has to find ways to cope with it but working in a private school can drain one.

Yes
One has to find a way of adapting to it

💯

That's one advantage of public school, you have time to rest after your daily activities unlike private schools. I remember working in a private school and how draining it was.

Working in a private school can be draining and that is why public school is always the best. Thank you for reading.

Here we have school days from Monday to Saturday. It's surprising for me that you just take classes from Monday to Wednesday. It is sounding cool!

Yes. Those are the only days my subject (English language) is on the timetable, giving room for other subjects too.

Thank you, @tahastories1 I appreciate 🙏

Wow, I didn't think teaching in high school is fun or comfortable at all, viewing the possibility how things are going according to you it's not that much of a scary thing aside the behavioural aspect of students, the teaching seems to be fine especially when you just have one subject making it a lot easier to research and be updated on the course. It's nice seeing the picture of you having a good time in your workplace thanks for sharing.

Teaching is actually fun, though tedious. Teachers meet a lot of interesting things every day with students' behaviours, staff attitudes and the likes. Above all, enjoying a place is determined by how much benefit are there to make you stay. Thank you for reading.

Great experience. I really appreciate the present school management where you are teaching, because they seem to consider and value teachers. When I was reading this article, it reminded me of my working status in school for 15 yrs. Even if we get one free period, they substitute us for a teacher on leave, which means all 8 hrs. we have to work. This is best of your time so enjoy dear.

Hahaha. Yes. Sometimes, I experience substituting for a teacher when normally I should be resting. That is something teachers or any worker cannot escape from.

Public schools has some advantages over private, I enjoyed this opportunities when I was serving as well, I do go to my ppa twice a week and no one will ask me. #dreemerforlife

That's great. That's the beauty of public schools. Thanks for commenting

Awwwwwnnn!
Benefit of serving in a public school.
During our time, my friends that were working in public school used to laugh at us that are into private school because we resume work/school as early as 7:30am and close by 3:00pm and there's nothing like leaving when you're done with your teaching for the day.
You're really enjoying oo!

Yes. There are more benefits in public schools than in private schools and this is why most people enjoy a lot in public schools.
