My Dad was born here in Florida, 5 miles from where I live. His Mother and Father came here by ox-drawn wagon in the 1890s. He grew up fishing and running moonshine with his father. He was in World War 2 and was thrown in jail because while the military was having bigwigs talk to the troops, he asked why our allies planes had new Goodyear tires but our planes were having to land on bald tires, they said he was instigating a riot.
Sometime after the war, he moved to the Everglades and started fishing and shrimping out of there, I do not know what year it was but it was before the 1950s, when commercial fishermen were banned from fishing the area that he fished in the Everglades. This is when he moved back home and leased 15 acres of land that was on the south side of the Sebastian Inlet.
In 1969 the State of Florida outbid him for the land, and he stayed on :working for them: until 1971
We moved to Missouri and after all this country put him through, he still supported it by waging war on import, this was around 1972 or 73. He took everything out of his house that was not made in America and threw it in the trash. He would not buy anything that was not made in America.
I guess he had empty nest syndrome, too. The above photo was after all us kids had moved out, he took our pictures with our kids, a picture of him in the Air Force, and his garden veggies out on the front steps to take this picture. I think that is what he cared about, us and the garden.
