No, it is not what you think. It has nothing to do with the red and Amsterdam. Not anymore anyway ;)
Rua Nova do Carvalho had some very shady beginnings. It is a pedestrian street once known as a meeting point for sailors, local criminals and prostitutes.

The Pink Street (officially Rua Nova do Carvalho) is VERY pink! And it is filled with coffee tables, colorful umbrellas and people. Lots of people! In the evening it is even more crowded. With multiple pubs and clubs open until late night it fills up with crowd pretty fast.
In the source link above you can see few of the bars. Since I was just passing by, and during the day I did not shoot any of them. It would be very hard though all that crowd anyway.
You may want to notice the amount of garbage on the side (photo above)... but hey - that's what some tourists do ;)
Have I heard about it before?
Of course not! Even though it has been there (not the street itself, but the pink paint) for 10 years already.
It was one of those accidental discoveries when you walk, look around.. and then bam! How come I haven't seen it before? :o
Maybe because it is not very long and it ends on the next crossroad on both sides. The street that goes above with the yellow bridge gives a nice view to each side.
Pink street and matching pink shirt :D
Can you see it?
That's the little bridge I was mentioning. I was shooting from up there. Thank you Google :p

If you would like to visit, here is where to find it. It is very close to the main square (Praça do Comércio):
