We stopped in North Berwick a few weeks back for a bite to eat when out doing some touring in East Lothian.
North Berwick is a beautiful seaside and harbour town to the east of Edinburgh. Its quite touristy, so can get quite busy, particularly in summer.
It has a really quaint tidal harbour area which is very popular with small pleasure yachts.
Thats part of the yacht park to the side of the harbour - completely full !
Beyond the harbour is a rocky outcrop which juts out into the sea - its got a nice path you can walk along to the end.
The views out over the North Sea there are quite stunning.
The lovely weather we had was really making the sea standout with beautiful vibrant colours. The 3 girls on the jetty were jumping into the sea for a swim. It took them a while to drum up the courage for their first jump !
The view above looks back inland in a sort of North West direction, so the faint land you can see in the distance is actually Fife - another region of Scotland.
The town also has nice sandy beaches right along the front, on either side of the harbour. They have a paddling pool on the east side - it'll still be quite cold even in summer - its the North Sea after all !
Thats the beach on the west side of the harbour, stretching right out around the bay.
Thats another view down the side of the harbour edge on the west side - the blue of the sea really was mesmerising !
We did take a wander further into town and spotted a couple of nice churches.
We havent actually visited North Berwick much, infact, I think this was the first time I'd ever stopped and walked around. It reminded me of how pretty it is, so I must visit again - it can just be quite difficult to park as it gets so busy, especially in Summer.
The harbour would have developed around 100+ years ago, particularly for the herring fishing which was very profitable way back then. However, the herring stocks pretty much died out in around the 1930s due to over-fishing. Nowadays fishing around the UK is carefully controlled so that the stocks of all species is not over fished.
We enjoyed our short visit to North Berwick. There was lots to see, and the weather was stunning. The sea views were worth it alone. We will certainly need to make it back again to explore the town further at some point soon.
