Castro São Lourenço - Esposende - Vila Chã // Riding Portugal

in #hive-16377214 days ago
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

castro.jpg

After an afternoon that was supposed to be spent on the beach in Esposende, where the plan was to enjoy the sun and the sea, we had to leave. The day, which started with blue skies, quickly turned into a gray afternoon, with winds that ruled out the idea of walking by the sea (as I showed you here a few days ago). We then decided to change our plans and go up to Castro de São Lourenço, one of the region’s historical points that we hadn’t yet seen.

The way to Castro is through secondary streets and is on top of a hill where you can see the sea. Dense vegetation, typical of the place, surrounded the winding roads, creating an almost mystical atmosphere as we approached the top.

When we arrived, we were met with an unexpected scene: a motorcycle festival was in full swing. The sound of the engines, mixed with the wind, fills the hills, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Motorcyclists from different places arrived with their jackets with logos identifying which club they belonged to and brought with them a unique energy that contrasted with the serenity of the place. The motorbikes, lined up in organized rows, gave a modern touch to the old Castro setting, creating an interesting contrast between the present and the past.

Castro de São Lourenço contains ruins of old Castro buildings, giving an idea of the life of the people who lived there centuries ago. The stones that form the circular walls of the houses and other buildings were weathered, but still preserved the essence of what was once a thriving community. Walking through the ruins, with the distant sound of motorbikes in the background, was like being in two worlds at once — the past and the present.

Continuing the tour, we arrive at the small Church of São Lourenço, which stands out for its simplicity. Built in a modest style, it harmonizes perfectly with the natural landscape and the historical environment of the place. The interior, although small, is cozy, with whitewashed walls and a simple altar, decorated with images of saints. The peace felt there contrasted with the liveliness of the party, offering a space for reflection for those who stopped there.

As we walked through Castro de São Lourenço, the cold weather and gray skies, which had initially kept us away from the beach, now seemed less harsh. The fog that formed on the hills added a mysterious touch to the place.
We left happy to have discovered another place full of history, here, so close to home.
