It seems that to start this discussion, we have to equate perceptions to get the same understanding: that simply the meaning of lying is saying something that is not true.
That's like saying something is gray when its actual color is white. Or, even more extreme, saying something is black when its actual color is white.
Lying can be about anything and even touch all dimensions of our lives. Even we dare to lie for kindness "reasons"!
Lying is something that is conveyed to others and has an impact on them. The impact can be a good impact, a bad impact, or even a worse impact.
Why is it done?
There are many things that cause a person to commit a lie, but in general, a lie is done out of compulsion and on purpose.

Deliberate lies, often done because of encouragement from within a person. It was done because they wanted to get "something" from a lie that was committed.
Deliberate lying is related to the desire to gain an advantage or favorable conditions for the person who lies when the lie is committed.
How does it feel?
What is clear is that someone who lies will never feel comfortable! That applies to everyone, both for the person who lied himself and especially for the person who has been lied to.
It's always that a lie is preceded by an error or to hide something so that others don't know.
When a lie has been started, that first lie must be followed by other lies to support the first lie, then continue and continue.
Lying is something that everyone hates, even the liar himself. How come? Even with the intention of someone who will lie, it has resulted in a fierce battle because of the tug of war between the encouragement of potential good and the potential for evil in one's soul or mind.
People who lie will never feel calm and comfortable. People who lie always have to prepare for further lies because they always feel haunted by worry for fear that their lies will be exposed.

A lie has never had a good impact. Even if there is, it is only a bit of pseudo-goodness and is temporary. Because in the end, when the lie is exposed, there is only loss, regret, and futility.

The only way to improve is to boldly apologize and be honest about telling the truth.
