I can't believe I hadn't done this earlier!!! I've wanted to have a t-shirt business for a long time, but like most people, taking that first step is very hard.
Well for this type of business, it turns out the building of an online shop is pretty simple... Yeah it's time consuming, but so is watching a bunch of tik-tok videos!
I watched a bunch of videos to figure out how to do this. Not on tik-tok, on you-tube university. The hard part was not to get distracted by other videos I want to watch. Though most of them are educational, I want to do so many things, if I don't concentrate on one thing at a time I'll never get any of them done!
I ended up choosing RedBubble as the first platform to sell my t-shirts on. I plan to create a shop on Etsy, Amazon, and a couple other ones too. For the moment, this is where I'm doing the bulk of my learning, I figure they will all have somewhat of a learning curve, but at least they all have some similarities.
The first thing I did was give myself a reason for making a print on demand business. I want a side hustle that involves my creativity, and lets me do it from anywhere in the world. I always thought making t-shirts would be fun. I want passive income.
Than I looked into what niches would best fit me. I thought I would be best served in the areas I know fairly well: art, homesteading, rewilding, truth, education, nutrition.
I looked at google trends, tik-tok, amazon handmade, etsy and a few more sites to get fine tune the niche I wanted to get into. What I discovered is this:
Sacred geometry shirts
- 65k results in redbubble
- Above 50 score for past 12 months worldwide on google trends
- 21 results on amazon handmade
- 7000 results on Etsy
Mindset shirts
- 82k results in redbubble
- Above 75 score for past 12 months worldwide on google trends
- 38 results on amazon handmade
- 7600 results on Etsy
Feel Good shirts
- 45k results on redbubble
- Above 75 score for past 12 months worldwide on google trends
3.600 results on amazon handmade - 4500 results on Etsy
That was a grueling day, as all I wanted to do was design some stuff and learn how to make a shop!!!
When I started to actually design some shirts, I went off track a little from my selected niches, but I think they're just niches within the Mindset Niche, such as this shirt in these picture.
I wrote down every idea I had on a note pad for the designs I wanted to create, and made a list I could check off every time I completed one.
I started by designing the t-shirts on Canva, which is crazy simple to work with, and has all sorts of templates you can use. Also, there are templates for so many different things, not only t-shirts. I got the free trial that lasts 3 months and if I like it, if I continue this business and I see it growing, I will pay the $10 or $12 a month it normally costs. It has a lot of content you can use commercially, a lot of elements and graphics.
I signed up to RedBubble like I said previously, and uploaded my designs one at a time. They're pretty awesome too actually, because when you upload your designs, the website automatically pastes them onto the t-shirts and apparel that models are already wearing. It's like magic!
That's where I am at the moment, what I need to work on next (besides creating more designs, and uploading them to a few platforms) is marketing. How do I sell T-shirts... That is the question, but I am researching all of this stuff right now.
Next Step - Digital Marketing:
- Come up with 30 days worth of posts
- Create the content to be posted.
- Use Reals, Shorts, and Tiktok to promote my shirts.
- Push content 2 to 3 times a day.
