There’s something magical about waking up on a sunny Sunday in late autumn and deciding to hit the trails. That’s exactly what I did today in the old village of Elatoxori. I can’t tell you how much this place charmed me, with its blend of history, nature, and that crisp, woodsy mountain air that wakes up every part of you. The plan was simple: take a walk in the forest, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the vibes of this sleepy little village.
Elatoxori, located in the Pieria region of Greece, is a charming mountain village with a rich history and stunning natural surroundings. The village is divided into two settlements: the modern Elatoxori and the Old Elatoxori. The older settlement, situated higher in the mountains, suffered significant destruction during World War II when it was burned down by German forces in 1944. However, the area has since been rebuilt and retains much of its traditional character
First off, the forest. Oh, what a sight! The trails were blanketed in golden-brown leaves, and the trees were naked. Every step felt like walking through a painting. The sun filtering through the branches added a great detailed to this amazing autumn colors.
Then there were the wooden bridges. Scattered along the trail, these quaint little crossings turned my hike into a treasure hunt trying to find the best. And the Love Waterfalls—wow. It's not like the biggest waterfalls you could find but reaching a waterfall that is deep into the forest with those amazing colors is something that fills your mind.
The trail also led me to a spot called Keramida, a name that has such a rustic ring to it. It felt like a connection to the village’s history. After reaching it it was not something great just a faucet with running water from the waterfalls but the trail was amazing .
Afterward, wandering through the old village itself, with its cobblestone paths and stone houses, was the cherry on top. The people were welcoming, the air smelled of woodsmoke and mountain herbs. The village had a lot of restaurants with amazing smelly souvles.
