Prosto z paskudnej, skorumpowanej, zepsutej do szpiku kości Polski z gorzkiego świata literackiego pana M. Gorzki udałam się do ponurej i pięknej, surowej Norwegii, gdzie odwiedziłam wyspę Barrøy i mieszkającą tam rodzinę o tym samym nazwisku.
Straight from the nasty, corrupt, rotten to the core Poland of the bitter literary world of Mr. M. Gorzka I went to the bleak and beautiful, harsh Norway, where I visited the island of Barrøy and the family of the same surname living there.
Razem z bohaterami oprawiałam ryby, wiosłowałam faeringiem po wzburzonym morzu, naprawiałam i suszyłam sieci, ścinałam drzewo, zabijałam konia, spacerowałam wokół wyspy zbierając mewie jaja na śniadanie, odwiedzałam ląd, wracałam do samotni, byłam świadkiem śmierci i narodzin, obserwowałam upływający czas, gospodarowałam w najlepszym tego słowa znaczeniu i rozwijałam infrastrukturę tego maleńkiego świata.
Together with the family members I skinned fish, rowed a faering across the stormy sea, mended and dried nets, cut down a tree, killed a horse, walked around the island collecting seagull eggs for breakfast, visited the mainland, returned to the hermitage, witnessed death and birth, watched the passing of time, farmed in the best sense of the word and developed the infrastructure of this tiny world.

It hit me so much! How good it was! The harsh atmosphere was perfectly reflected in the dry and stingy language used to present the story of this small family, living alone on a small Norwegian island near Lofoten. The author seems to maintain total distance, presents the story without a shadow of emotion, and yet - oh my, how much is happening here!

Umieszczając akcję na wysepce tak małej, że miejsca wystarcza tylko dla jednej rodziny, Jacobsen obnaża świat i pozbawia nas wszelkich złudzeń w marzeniach o utopii.

The Barrøy family is poor, but they certainly do not lack courage and the will to survive. They live off of cultivating a small plot of land, they have some livestock, they fish and make use of what the waves wash ashore. When the adolescent Ingrid decides to leave the island, it does not bode well.
“The Invisibles” is a novel characterized by universality, simplicity and balance on the one hand, and on the other hand, it shocks with its majesty straight from Shakespeare in the blinding descriptions of storms and gales. By placing the action on an island so small that there is only room for one family, Jacobsen exposes the world and dispels any illusions in our dreams of utopia.
